RV park protocol: What dump valves to leave open?
From reading this forum, I know not to leave the black open until Im ready to dump. What about my grey tank? Can I leave it open the whole time so that my shower and sink water dont fill it up?

When it is time to dump the black tank, you will want a pretty full grey tank so that you can use that water to flush the stinky slinky and push the rest of the solids out. You can leave the grey open until you need to start "storing" grey water in reserve for that black tank "push." \ken
PS. I'm assuming that you are connected to a sewer, right? Don't leave the grey tank open if you aren't!

Some people do, but I do not. Any sediment tends to be left behind and can cause problems in the future. Leave both black and grey closed and that will also allow you plenty of grey flush water after you dump the black.

Sewer? I thought im supposed to run the slinky hose to the curb. Just kidding. Yes, I have a sewer. Thanks for the response.

Makes sense. I wasnt sure because I see a lot of folks around here with there dump hoses out.

That's what I've done for over 40 years and have never had a sewer problem, but, whoever owned the Magna before we bought it didn't And I'm still trying to get it cleaned out.

We don't even put out our hoses until we need to dump. Makes the campsite look so much better. 😌

One comment: Ever see the add in an RV magazine for expensive and useless Black Tank Chemicals.. You know the one. Shows a Stinky RV.
Well. I found out how to make that happen.. Just leave a valve open and use a SLUNKY or other sewer hose support so the hose does not form a water trap (Required in some areas like Lost Wages, NV).
Yup. sewer gasses backed right up out of the ground through my Gray tank and out the vent. Stinky stuff.. That's why I keep 2 of my 3 valves closed.. Gray 2 (Bathroom and shower) drains via a 3/4 inch hose that is not supported and forms a natural water trap.

Accidently left a valve to black tank open and had sewer flies in the black tank for a while until I opened the toilet and sprayed bug spray for a few seconds then closed it. Nastiest bugs I can imagine!!

When dumping, just make SURE that he slinky is SECURELY fastened to the fitting at the end of the slinky, the one that you hook up to your tank drain . . . . Don't ask me why I am giving people this advice okay? It hasn't been long enough to be able to laugh about it yet.

Through experience we dump the tanks every 3rd morning...never a problem since we adopted a routine.

I leave my grey tank valve open. Otherwise, I'd be running outside every day to drain the tank.
To keep the sewer hose clean, after draining the black tank I flush the tank with water a few times.

In 16 years of full-timing we never left the gray valve open except for at the very beginning of our travels. Then we noticed the crud left in the hose and figured that same crud was building up at the bottom of the tank. After that we let it fill up. It just takes a minute or so to dump the tank and we could go 10-12 days of boondocking before needing to dump. Even in RV parks we left it closed.
We also wiped our dishes and pots with a used paper towel or napkin before washing them. This got off the food particles and grease. We didn't put coffee grounds down the drain either.
