Rv sales are up for 2012. Good news.

Good news for all of us that RV sales continue to improve. First saw this in a business magazine last week.

http://www.rvia.org/?ESID=indicators

· 2012 shipments. In August, RV manufacturers shipped 24,460 units, the strongest August total in five years. Shipments of towable RVs were up 14.6%, but motorhomes grew the most, improving 27.3% over the same month a year ago. RV shipments in 2012 total 202,305 units through August, 10.5% ahead of the same period in 2011. RV shipments in 2012 are expected to reach 273,600 units, an increase of 8.4% from 2011, as the economy grows, credit availability improves, and consumers respond to innovative new designs and features.

· 2013 projected shipments. RV shipments are projected to grow slightly in 2013 to 275,300 units, according to Dr. Richard Curtin, Director, Surveys of Consumers at the University of Michigan.

· 2011 shipments. In 2011, RV manufacturers shipped 252,300 units, and increase of 4.1% from 2010. This was the highest annual total for RV shipments since 2007.

· Shipments history. 2010 shipments reached 242,300 units, an increase of 46.2% from 2009. 2009 shipments totaled 165,700 units; down 30.1% from 2008 because of the economic downturn economists have dubbed the Great Recession. Manufacturers shipped 237,000 units in 2008, down 32.9% from 2007 due to the recession. After five consecutive years of record growth, RV shipments dropped 9.5 percent in 2007 as consumers postponed purchases because of early effects of the U.S. economic slowdown. Shipments in 2007 totaled 353,400 — the fourth highest in the past quarter century. 390,500 RVs were shipped in 2006, the best total in the past 25 years. For a historical chart showing RV shipments by year, go to: RVIA Historical Glance.

Although it does indicate an improving RV market, it's worth noting that RVIA only publishes data on shipments to dealers which is not the same as dealer sales. Units sitting unsold on dealer lots would show as a positive sign in the RVIA data.
