Absolutely. Seems like they never even contacted the family at christmas which was very out of character according to the son in the article. They really should have kept their family in contact.
I'd never go on a trip without people back home knowing where I am. Too much could potentially happen and I want folks to know where I am.
I am glad this had a happy ending though.

We use the Spot personal locator. Through satellites it emails ( or texts) up to 20 addresses an "I'm OK" message. Also has emergency alert capability sending your location to an emergency response center. Another button sends them a message to contact your road service for mechanical assistance.
The OK message includes a link showing your location.
If out of cell range we look to this in an emergency, but otherwise it is a great way to keep friends aware of our movements.
Go to our blog in the signature and click on the location link below our picture to see how it works.

"All's well that ends well".....
When we leave for extended trips (usually more than a couple days) we give an itinerary to our neighbors and some friends as well as our son who lives almost 700 miles from us. The itinerary includes cell phone #'s, tenative locations and an estimate of an approximate return date.

Found
FOUND...
ROMA - A couple from Canada reported missing by family members back in December after the abruptly moved out of a Weslaco RV park were found in Roma, alive and well, and unaware they were the focus of a national missing persons search.
Family member said they had not heard from Bruce and Linda Stewart since December and contacted local authorities, when they discovered the couple had left the Weslaco area.
Weslaco police said they forwarded the couples information to television stations as far away as Yuma, Arizona, thinking the couple may have left the state.
Roma police will file paperwork to have the couple removed from the state and national missing persons data bases.

I park for weeks/months at my daughter's in Seattle, my Mom's in Texas and at friend's places in between. Whenever I am on the road I send an email every night before bed telling my group of "minders" exactly where I am and which way I plan to travel the next day. If I anticipate that I won't have cell service, I will send it early, or at least mention that they may not hear from me.
This gives me peace of mind in knowing that if I get into trouble someone will know where to start looking for me. A couple of my minders have mentioned enjoying living vicariously thru my travels.
It takes 2 minutes and it could some day save me.
