RVing without toad

We are about to venture out on first journey in our new Baystar! Looking at Williamsburg VA or Virginia Beach. Our question is how many people have traveled without towing car? If so, what should we look for in Resorts that allows us to easily get around some amenities such as restaurants, shopping... If anyone has been to a resort in the areas mentioned above and can recommend excellent! Thanks so much

We have stayed at both. Williamsburg KOA and Va Beach KOA.
But we tow a toad, always have and always will. Very easy to lock the rig up and take off whenever we want to wherever we want.
As far as Williamsburg, cabs and rentals available, and I would guess UBER. Downtown area nice, as is walking thru the old section of Williamsburg.
Va Beack, the same as far as rentals/UBER. But Pacific Ave which is near the campground, and parallels the beach, is full of shops and resteraunts. But also alot of nic nack/tourist gift shops. If you bring bikes, it's a very easy way to get around, and area is bike friendly.

Congrats on your new ride!

We thought we would rent cars for a couple years, after all this was our first rv and we didn’t know if we would enjoy traveling this way.

Two four day trips, a one full week trip and we were looking for a toad. It made our travel significantly better. The rental car thing was a real pain to us, although it’s a personal opinion.

Good luck and enjoy the ride!

Steve

I live near the area

I generally dolly a car behind. You will want a rental car to get around all the historic places. It is generally a rural area around Williamsburg. Even Virginia Beach you will want a car since the public transportation sucks around the area. I suppose you could use uber or something like that. I can't recommend a resort. There are some places on the military bases and private campgrounds. I have tent camped at one and a few weeks ago stayed in a thousand trails resort past Williamsburg in Topping, VA.

we were toad-less from 1986-2003. we took the rv (26’ class a) everywhere. we rented a few times but the process was a PITA. then we wised up and started towing.

to the OP...rent, uber, bikes. but condsider towing. don’t make quick decisions, though. getting a toad requires careful thought and planning.

We tried rving without a toad. Rented a car a few times.
We now tow a toad.
Hope it works out better for you than it did us!

Congratulations on your new RV.
We travel January thru April going from Ontario to Florida to New Orleans, and during the past 2 years have not taken a second vehicle.
We plan our trip well in advance to get the resorts or boondocks in the areas we want to visit.
We will shop for groceries when near a Walmart or Costco and stock up for anywhere from 3 days to 1 month at a time.
If we find that during a month long stay, we want to get out, we will either take a cab or rent a car.
While in San Antonio we actually caught a city bus right at the RV Park and went into the tourist area.
We have a 32' Class A and it has been easy to get around in and find parking relatively easy.
For us, towing a motorcycle trailer was easy, but we found it was not necessary.
I'm sure you will find your way through the learning curve and do what suits your lifestyle best.
Enjoy!

We lasted 2 weeks before getting a toad and have never been sorry with the decision.

It’s a Jeep thing.
They are ideal for being towed and you can go places rentals won’t let you and Uber won’t go. I went without a toad nustbonce and just hung around the park.

We just got back from Williamsburg and had a great time. Stayed at American Heritage and loved it.. There's another campground nearby called Anvil that the trolley stops at that will allow you to be able to get around.

While not specific to this location, there is an ongoing thread on the topic of traveling without a TOAD here http://www.irv2.com/forums/f258/clas...ow-399839.html

You probably will want to explore the two options first, to towed, or not to towed.

I'm almost positive you will discover, life sucks without a towed sometimes, and if Uber won't go there, maybe you shouldn't go there either.

Rental works sometimes, and can be a viable alternative in those times when towing would be a (PITA).

But having your own personal vehicle at a moments notice, at no extra cost or lengthy paperwork is priceless.
