We registered our MH in our home state (Alaska), bought the MH in California and did the closing paper work in Nevada, hence no sales tax.

The state you register it in. Some states will require the dealer to collect the sales tax for that state, then when you register it, you have to file for a refund with proof of tax payment in the state your register it.

If you were required to pay the tax in the state of purchase your home state may give you credit for the tax you paid which means you will only be paying the difference between your state's tax and the state tax in your state of purchase. Each state has a different way of treating sales tax so find out ahead of time.
Just to add to the confusion some dealers are registered to collect tax in different states. I purchased a truck in Texas a few years ago and they charged me NYS tax and I did not have to do anything special upon registration.

You'll pay the difference between the two states.

Best state to use as domicile and states with no sales tax
Thanks everyone for your feedback! My wife and I are just in the planning stage now.We have visited several dealerships and plan a factory tour in June.I was wondering what is the best state to claim as a domicile and how to avoid paying state tax on an rv purchase!
Thks

Pretty sure most states will collect the sales tax when you register the rv.

Depends on the states. You have to ask the dealer. We bought our MH in Texas. They collected the sales tax for my home state of Indiana. When I registered the unit in Indiana, there was no hassle.

At times the state you purchase your unit in will not charge you state tax but a small fee to issue a temporary registration.

Unless you are planning to move out of the state of MN, trying to avoid paying the state sales tax and registration fees, they will come looking for you.

Exactly. When the economy tanked, states went looking for revenue streams. They cracked down on the MT LLC's by cross-referencing them with state voting registrations and tax records. Colorado was the first to publicly go after these folks.
If you(the OP) do want to legally avoid paying taxes and set-up an LLC, contact Bennett & Bennett law firm in MT. for free advice. I contacted them and was advised this was not legal for my circumstances, and they would not participate.
