A friend of mine once pulled into a Mercedes dealership in an old pickup wearing a t-shirt and very worn out blue jeans. He looked a lot like Frank Zappa at the time. He already knew what he wanted and really only needed someone to do the sales transaction. The salesman barely gave him the time of day.
My friend walked over to the receptionist and said "I'll take 2 of those" pointing to the SL on the floor as he handed her his AMEX Black Card (back in the 80's that was a BIG deal to have one). She said a sales person would be happy to help him, he said no I want YOU to get the sale. The GM was called over and my friend explained why and insisted the receptionist get the commission or he would go to another dealer. He refused to finalize the sale until a check was made out to her for the commission.
That friend was a California real estate tycoon. He may not have looked like much, but he could buy 2 new expensive cars on an AMEX card. Ya just never know who the tire kicker really is.

Lot of cynics out there. While a lot of salesmen are boozers and skirt chasers, most are honest family men working straight commission. Most of the time the dealerships with the poorest salesmen had the worst management, including owners. After my 1st month at a broken down Chrysler dealer, coming in 2nd, the owner fired me because it was easier than facing his problems that I had the experience to solve.
I'm out of this thread, I feel ill how some of you treat salesmen without who goods wouldn't move yet they are looked down upon.
There isn't a school to learn to sell cars, it's all done on the job training. I avoided dealers who used extreme pressure.

Well I did all my shopping in Tulsa. I had the sales people driving units out to my house to check out. This was back in 2002. Last year we did a little looking at some smaller units at a dealer off of 169 and 21st. He cut 25% off the list and offer some good financing. We had decided to keep our unit. These guys kept bugging me for weeks, offering to improve the deal.

During the 80's a sales trainer by the name of Harold Gash, held seminars and marketed his training tapes through Nightingale Conant.
He called it "New Concepts in Selling". He started his seminar explaining that there really wasn't anything new in selling but, was how you used what was known. The seminar was about how to sell and much more but, the main thing that he taught was Honesty in selling.
If you want to understand sales, It would pay you to see if you could come up with a copy. It's also a good education and tool for the customer in dealing with sales people. He taught how to and why, you should be proud to be a salesperson.
Some have indicated disgust in dealing with salesmen and many are justified in that feeling. Look for the honest ones and stick with them. The good ones don't have to go looking for new prospects, their customers do that for them.

This has been interesting topic. DW and I went out to Tucson last winter to look at Coach A and Coach B. Two different Dealers involved. I will say that they are almost across the street from each other. Who they are doesn't matter nor the brands but you can probably guess as much.
Both were told that we are 'just looking' and wanted to see the brand first hand, test drive and ask a few questions.
Both Dealers took the time to show what they had in inventory, took a test drive, and answered some questions.
For us, here is where they differ and why one of them may be out of the picture down the road.
Dealer A sent a follow up email almost by the time I left. Followed up with a phone call and wanted to know how they did in answering questions and showing the coach, etc. I've since gotten two more email follow ups one year later.
Dealer B. Well... I waited a few days for an email. I figured a week would not be an unreasonable time for a response but nothing, not even a thank you. I sent HIM an email thanking him for HIS time. Even sent one more(I should have cc'd his boss but did not). Still nothing. Interesting side to this, the owner caught us at the door on the way out, and I paraphrase this, 'we know you aren't in the market now, but please consider us when you are ready'...He gets it. Too bad his sales person doesn't.
(yes, his email address is valid, and yes he is still there)

X2....we have purchased multiple vehicles from salesmen we really liked and treated us right. It makes buying a new vehicle so much easier and enjoyable. We have a referred friends and relatives to them who have made purchases. When we go back to those dealerships if they are not working that day we find out when they will be working or call their contact numbers and go back when they are there. We have also went to wherever they were working if they had changed dealerships and was still the same brand we wanted.

The Problem is: Salesmen are unpaid, until someone buys.
We cannot expect them to care about us, until we fund their salary.
They talk to us, they Ride & Drive us, they work long hours, they do not set the prices, they do not get to pick the merchandise, they educate us-and then we drive halfway across the U.S. to save a few dollars.
They have a terrible Job, a Job that you would not wish on a family member. And, they have it because they cannot get a better Job.
Do them a favor, do not waste their time-if you do not want to buy from them. Maybe they will run into a real buyer that will allow them to pay their bills-feed their families-and not complain about how they were not treated like royalty.

I think the complaints are about the ones that don't show respect to their potential customers.
There is training available to anyone that wants to get it. But they may have to look for it and may have do it on their own. Been there, done that, as a salesman & a trainer within the companies I've worked for & in my own business.
Another thing that is taught is "If you do not love your job, get another one that you do love & you will never have to work another day in your life because you will want to work and you will be much better for it!
I've had this little conversation with some of my sales people over the years also, & they have come back and thanked me for letting them go.
There are too many people out there working in a profession that they don't belong in. They need to realize it and move on. If the employee doesn't realize this, the employer should. I know, a lot of employers don't offer sales training or any kind of counseling, and they are fools. They are shooting themselves in the foot & pay for it in the long run & many don't realize it.

Deny , some of what you say I agree with some of it not. But we all have our opinions . It sounds like someone hit a nerve here with you. Perhaps you are a salesman for a R.V. co. Here's my 2 cents. It would do some or all sales people to listen to the dale Carngie sales tapes . I sold Beltone hearing aids at one time I listened to these tapes often and really helped me with my attitude about sales and how to deal with people. But I think on the other side when someone goes shopping for a car or R.V. they need to be honest and tell the sales person exactly what you want and what you want to pay for it . I once told a sales man at a car dealer ,"before we get started I want you to know If you start to high pressure me , I'm out a here. " Then I told him what I wanted and what I wanted to spend and not one dollar more. I really think he appreciated all that and he was one of the best sales man I ever delt with and was very helpful. I also told him ,"look, I dont want you trying to sell me stuff I dont need like $600 worth of protection plan on a car that has your warentee. He said "Thats fine , we wont evrn go there." One other thing, I was not snotty or did not act like a smart A..I was very polite but he knew I was serious as a heart attac.

No, I am retired, in Fla
I ordered a new View from Lichtsenn in Iowa, flew out & picked it up. The price was agreeable, & I got my new coach just like I wanted with 25 miles on it.
I have owned about 10 motorhomes over the last 40+ years.
I familiarized myself with the view at an RV show- but never drove one until I already owned it.
I have sympathy for a guy that has to do what the RV sales people do, I wish them all a better job

Deny, I don't think that any of these comments are meant towards the hard working salesman who knows his product, knows how to deal with people, and shows some respect. I don't ever expect to be treated like royalty, and genuinely treat people like they treat me. I think that most of the comments are made towards the guy that tries to BS his way thru a sale, keeps taking you where you don't want to go, and tells you what you need, or pushes a sale for something you don't want with the fatal comment(at least for me) "just buy this one, you'll be getting another new one in a couple of years anyway".
I think most people(not all) out looking to buy a MH and spend this kind of money have a good idea what they want and it is usually not their first RV. Like you having owned 10 RV's, I'm sure if some salesman started BS'ing you it would turn you away and you would look for someone else or another dealer to deal with. I think that's where a lot of these comments stem from, not people disliking salesman because they are salesman but more sharing stories of how they were treated by the bad or uneducated(in sales of MH's) ones. Every profession has it's bad apples.

I recently read on this forum where RVOne sold over $25M worth of Entegras & Newmars at the RV show in Hershey. At 5% commission split among 12 salespeople they each took home an average of $100,000 for 5 days work. Not sure any of these guys/gals are wishing for a better job!
