Exclamation Samsung RF197 Refrigerator Discontinued

I finally made the decision to replace my crummy Norcold 1200LRM fridge with the Samsung RF197 that many folks have used as a retrofit. I called around today to check on pricing of the Samsung and was told by Home Depot that Samsung has discontinued this model. It has been replaced with the Samsung RF217. While the RF217 is the same height and width as the RF197, it is 2 inches deeper, meaning it will stick out of an existing fridge cutout that much more. The newer model is 2 cubic feet larger so it will have more room, but if depth is a concern like it is for me, this may make the Samsung no longer a viable option for some RV retrofits.

I was able to find a local appliance store that still had 10 of the 197's in stock, but they were the only store I could find that still had them...I almost waited too long. If you have been thinking of doing the same retrofit, I suggest you donít wait any longer.

Here is a link to the specs of the new RF217.

Samsung still lists it on their website too.

Samsung RF197 Refrigerator Discontinued

The Home Depot website in my neck of the woods says the 197 is "unavailable", which is why I called my local store. The salesperson I spoke with looked up the model number and confirmed what their web site said. He looked into it and called me back with what I reported here. The salesperson at the large appliance store that I called afterwards said he believed they were being discontinued as well, but he didn't know for sure. He did say his computer showed no more were being ordered, which seemed to validate what HD told me.

I hope I'm wrong folks, but I'm just reporting what I was told...

You may well be right. It is not unusual for the stores to have advance warning that a product is being discontinued, because they order stock in advance and so get warned that future orders may not be filled. They also often get "close-out" pricing from the manufacturer.

Rumors of the RF197 being discontinued seem to pop up every 6 months or so. Maybe it's because they produce them in large batches, and the availability drops to near zero between batches. Or maybe it's some other reason.

But if the Samsung RF197 is being discontinued, someone needs to tell Heartland RV. They are making the RF197 standard in their 2015 top-of-the-line Landmark of 5th wheels. I'm betting they plan to go with the RF197 across the board in all their lines that offer a big residential refrigerator because the price is lower than the Frigidaire (at least at the retail level - I don't know what kind of deal they have with either Samsung or Frigidaire on price) and the Samsung will run on a 1000 watt MSW inverter, which is also cheaper than the PSW inverter they were using.
