Scam ?

I listed my tow dolly on Craigslist, and after an initial is it still for sale, I got this reply.
"Thanks for getting back to me i will like you to know that the price is alright with me and the condition is good for the price. ..i will like you to know that the only mode of payment I can make to you is through check but don't worry I won't pick the Item not until you get your money then I will arrange for pick up.let me know if this is alright with you."

Sounds like another scam to me. I responded that for that amount I'd prefer cash. He responded , within a minute or so, that it was the only way he could pay for it and thanked me for my time.

Sounds Ok to me, you have the dolly, you will receive a check, cash/deposit it, then make arrangements for him to pick it up........I don't see how you can be scammed if done in this order .

Scam ?

I’ve had a few of those responses. Problem is the check may clear your bank, but fail on down the line and you get stuck with a returned check fee by your bank. The only way I sell anything on Craigslist, etc., is “cash on pickup.”

Here's one example of that being a problem.

The only way I would do it is if I took the check to the bank upon which it was written and cashed it there before I let him take the dolly. If he had the cash in the bank he could do that. If I take a hot check and deposit it in my bank, when it comes back it is my fault. The money is deducted from my account and I am responsible for dealing with the hot check. If you go to his bank and withdraw the money they check his account before they give you the money and tell you right then that there are not enough funds.

Sounds like the same email I got when I sold an old trailer last month. I sold it for cash to some one else.

I liked "the condition is good for the price". He hasn't seen it.

I did not spell out, he would have to wait till his check clears his bank/financial Institution......Like mentioned above, if he can write a check ......just tell him to bring cash.......

Here's how this will go down -- you recieve check, you deposit or cash check, check bounces, you are charged bounce fee (my credit union charges me $25 for someone else's bounced check that I deposit). Even if you still have the item, you will have bounce fee.

And the check writer will also write the check for over the amount and have you refund the difference, try it won't cost you much except giving someone your address, just kept the check on your trophy wall and tell the guy it bounced.
