There used to be devices called 'fuseable links' that just looked like a fat piece of rubberized wire.
They were bi metallic and would open a circuit temporarily when overheated or overloaded.
I've had them in an older Dodge. Corvette. And Datsun.
A real head scratcher if I ever had one

Ha, there's a bit of a difference in when they go off unexpectedly and when you turn them off on purpose. Our old Ford camper hauler used to do that with both the camper and boat lights on, but they would come back on very quickly. The pucker factor definitely goes up when they go off unexpectedly, especially on a DARK night. Don't remember loosing my pants though, unless possibly to clean them.

The Dodge would do the same thing until I added a relay to handle all the additional lights. I would guess your switch is being overloaded by something, as others have already mentioned.

Reading Biscuits post reminded me of a time back in the late '50s while I was in the Navy. Several of us had a couple of days off and we were going from McGuire AFB to Stratton ME. We were in ME during the middle of the night when the when the generator on the '51 Chevy stopped charging. I drove what must have been over a hundred miles with no headlights in order to keep the the battery from discharging to a point where the engine would stop. It was a two lane road with very little traffic and I would turn the lights on only long enough for a car to pass when I needed to. After driving without lights for a while my imagination would cause me to see all sorts of things in the road ahead. We spent most of our time in Stratton getting the gen repaired and back in place for the return trip.

Hope you find the problem soon before you get a bad reputation. :-))

If driving without headlights bothers you, don't go to Egypt. I rarely ever saw anyone use them. No idea why.

For about $20 you can add a set of LED driving lights. Complete separate circuit from the headlights. So little draw they don't need a relay. Redundancy can be your friend! ST

I heard they think it takes more gas to power lights. I guess it does a tiny bit.
