Security...

I am new to RV'ing and would like to know about security. I purchased a TT and want to know what security measures need to be taken on this investment? Is theft inside a campground a major concern?

I personally think that the majority of RV'ers are honest. We have never had any trouble with any kind of theft in the campgrounds we've visited. We have visited surrounding attractions leaving all manor of camping gear outside...nothing that most campers don't already have. I do have my portable surge protector under cable lock and always lock the RV(including storage bins) whenever we are gone for the day. If one keeps valuable items out of sight, honest people will remain so. If you are in a questionable area where the CG is accessible to outside unsavory influence, you may want to take some extra precautions.

If there is something that makes you feel unsafe or uncomfortable, follow your gut and move on. Bob

We were one of 18 host couples working at a campground in Brevard, NC the last 2 years. We only had 1 incident during that time & it was a teenager who took scooter that was parked outside our store. Regretably when her parents were confronted they didn't think it was a big deal.

I agree. We are full time and left the CG we're at now and met w group at another CG last weekend. We left the grill, bicycles and other stuff by the picnic table when we left. Not locked up. No Problems. In 30+ years of camping we have never had a problem, except for the situation below.

Only problem I have ever had was in the Hill City KOA in South Dakota (near Mt. Rushmore). Very nice CG, but there was also a hotel on the property. I had a firefighter flag stolen. It was only a $ 3.99 flag, but it was the principle that bothered me.

We bought a neat little security system from Radio Shack. It was about $3. It is a little gadget that holds 2 triple A batteries and is only slightly larger than that. It has a very small flashing red light on it. That's all it does. Nothing else. We turn it on and leave it inside on the counter right by the entrance door. It can be seen from outside. It flashes all night and I think would make an intruder think we had a security system. We have used it over 100 nights and are still on the same batteries.
