I have seen several posts about self defense while on the road. A very real concern. While researching small hand guns for my wife I came across something many of you probably already know about but it is new to me. It is MUCH better than a hand gun in someones hands who is not familiar with fire arms. It also does not have the legal ramifications a gun does. It is a Pepper Ball gun. It functions as pepper spray but will shoot a pepper ball up to 60 ft. with a lot of force. It also looks like and functions as a flashlight so you can take it with you when you are walking the dog, etc. The one I have is called a Pepperball Life lite. (About $160 on Amazon) It comes with some practice balls so you can learn to use it. We keep it in a drawer close to the bed. I have never had to use it but I feel much better knowing it is there. (I am not a rep for this company. It just makes a lot of sense to me.) I don't know exactly what the laws are for pepper spray, but I figure in this case it will be better to ask for forgiveness than permission.

I appreciate your responsible approach to personal safety. Devices like this can indeed be helpful, but can also lull you into a false sense of security as far as their true ability to deter any would-be evil doer.

Please be mindful that some jurisdictions regulate pepper spray and similar devices with some pretty draconian laws. Do your research as you travel from state to state.

I am not trying to stir up any 2nd amendment discussion, but I got the sense from your posting that you may have a handgun already but that your DW is either not comfortable with firearms or you lack confidence in her abilities. If I am right on my assumptions, then please consider getting her some appropriate training and range experience. Even if she prefers the pepper ball as her first choice, she should be sufficiently trained to safely touch and handle all the options within your RV.

Bear spray is better than wasp spray. The best defense is always try to keep yourself out of a situation where you will need it. If it doesn't feel safe then move!

I have traveled much of the US and worked in some pretty seamy parts of town(s). South LA, Watts and Oakland included. I’ve also camped in some pretty “undesirable” locations. Never have I had a problem with personal safety. Keep your eyeballs out, smile, be kind. You probably won’t be bothered. Even while working in and around Watts I never had issues.

"JD22".....Nice post, good product for those that don't want to deal with firearms. If you read the info, you only need to burst one of the pepperballs within a couple feet of the suspect.

If you plan to make a trip to Canada the only pepper spray allowed is that which is labeled for bears.

I would not want to shoot that off inside a motor home outside fine but not inside a confined space

Wasp spray only works if you are being attacked by a wasp. Otherwise, pepper spray or a baseball bat is better. Or maybe even a tennis racquet, where you can lob the empty pepper spray can at the intruder.
