Interesting...but 16 ft is not long enough at all locations and the cost of the extension is too high.

Valterra SS01

Received my Valterra SS01 and love it. I did however have to end up ordering the 5 inch clear extension as I don't get a good "snap" when I connect to 45 degree clear Camco adapter and therefore have a small drip. Hoping the 5 inch straight adapter clears this up. Also we will be wintering in Oregon, so will either have to use a lot of heat tape for hoses or figure something else out. No more smelly stinky slinky, but keeping it as backup in the storage tube.

The female end is a standard bayonet connection. Just connect it to one of your old ones when necessary.

I have a Rinoflex which has worked very well. I hate to give them the business but Wllmart has the hose and their price is much lower than Camping World's.

Above all, I would highly recommend the heaviest hose out there. Don't rely on the cheapies. They easily get tiny holes just hitting the rocks, etc. Those small holes will enlarge when you least expect it. :(

In 16 years of full-timing I've never had a hose bursting. Whew! Even if they still look good I replace it every two years.

As others have mentioned, the use of a clear section (weather straight, 45*, or curved) at the tank hookup end allows you to see when stuff is through draining and when the rinse is running clear. Listening for water to quit running in a hose you can't see through isn't a good way to determine if the yuck has stopped running as I can see the water and not hear it in mine sometimes.

As far as the rinse system back flow, I check for pressure before hooking the hose up. I hook it to a 1/4 turn stop valve which is hooked to a splitter and then another 1/4 turn valve, one going to the black tank and another going to the gray tank. By sequencing them I can keep positive pressure in the hose to prevent back flow.

Here's a excellent video (long) on a demonstration using a clear plexiglass tank and cleanout options. Those of you using the clear plastic cleanout connection and a hose to clean out, you'll be surprised that it really is not doing much beyond the sewer piping. It doesn't reach the tank.

This gentleman is also testing the ice cube method and various cleaners. Re: ice cubes, I thought of that while riding down the road a few days ago with a glass of water sitting on the dash. Even hitting bumps and turns that water did not move very much so I really doubt those ice cubes are doing much either - just gently moving. Instead...save them for a nice cold drink!

Thetford SmartDrain (??)

I have nothing good to say about the Thetford SmartDrain hose system. It simply does not work correctly. When I pull the dump valve the wast water spews out of the bayonet coupling at the wast valve, then it stops leaking and the water drains correctly. This is the third coupling. The original and two replacements. The first two lost the gasket down the drain tube when I dumped. This last one is "REDESIGNED" . The gasket is staying in place now but it still leaks when you first start the dump.

This is the worst system I have ever used. Very unsanitary and not worth the time, money or aggravation.

jerichorick,

I too bought the Thetford SmartDrain hose system going for what I thought was a quality product. I normally use the SaniCon, but when we are parked somewhere for a while I wanted a more permanent system. I tried the SmartDrain once with the gray water and had water seeping out at the waste connection. I contacted Thetford and they sent me a new upstream connection with foam gaskets, but I still got some seeping gray water. I am glad that I did not try this on the black water. I thought of creating a silicon paste completely coating the foam gasket for a better seal, but after reading your comments I think that I will just give up on this Thetford SmartDrain design. What were they thinking when they designed this?

RhinoFlex here, too. I am ok with the standard size, don't know if it is 10 or 15 feet, always long enough for us. As far as support, I took a piece of 4" sch 40 PVC and ripped it into thirds. A stainless screw and wing nut then allows you to take a 2 foot piece of PV and make a 6 foot support. A couple of offcuts from a 2x4 will give you an end and intermediate support

Have one sitting behind the cottage. Worked great for about a year then, one day, it started to sprout pin holes! The Thetford was my next attempt.

I am going to try to get to Grainger. They have many gaskets to chose from. I might be able to find a fix there. The system is based on irrigation couplings. The dumb idea of THAT gasket is what makes the system useless.

Had you angered any neighbors.... lol.

Curious - was the rhino rode hard and put up wet....

We are now full time so it will be easy to recall when we got this set up... hopefully no pin holes..
