Slide seal maintenance

Was wondering what most are using to keep the seals on your slides in good condition and lubed enough to make for easy in and out.?

I use your basic WalMart red can silicon, or any silicon. About every month or two I will spray the slide seal. Next step is, I'll slip my fingers behind the rubber seal and spray silicon on my fingers as I run my hand down the back of the slide seal. I'll also pull back the front seal and try to get some on the secondary seal.

I'll also spray all my baggage door seals and entrance door seal. At least every other month. Trading my 2013 tt in next week and all the rubber seals look brand new.

I use the 303 Protectant on my RV's tires. 303 is a water based product. It doesn't make your tires super shiny like oil based products, but it lasts much longer without the brown-ish color that appears from oil based products after a few weeks.

** I do make sure whatever I'm spraying is clean first.

Basically nothing except keeping everything clean. The only problems I've ever encountered (18 years with 4 slide Rvs) are poorly attached rubbers that pull loose, and only a couple of those. I guess it could be argued that excessive friction could lead to that, but I don't feel that is the case. When it has happened, it always seemed like shoddy workmanship rather than friction. I do like to keep the underside of the slides clean and polished, avoiding any drag there.

If you are convinced the rubber ages prematurely, 303 may help.

On most slides the primary seal is a D-shaped piece of rubber mounted on the inner and outer flanges. As long as those are in place and reasonably soft, you have a good weather seal. The flexible "wiper" pieces that most people seemed concerned about are mostly just debris & water scrapers, sluicing off water and dirt as the slide moves.

If you are talking about the seals (inside) and not the wiper (outside) the best thing to use and recommended by many manufacturers is talcum powder. Baby powder will work but it is usually scented. It was in my owners manual in a previous RV. Retract the slide a foot or two put some on a rag or paper towel and a quick wipe and it is done. It eliminates any sticking or noise from the seals when the slide moves. For the wiper I agree with 303.
