I generally check for signs. If there is a sign that says "No camping" or "no overnight camping" I will leave the slides in and just "rest". My rationale is that it is better for me to be resting than driving down the road falling asleep.

If there are no signs I may or may not put out the slides depending on the parking area.

Often we will stay in a travel plaza. Some of them have areas designated for RV, most don't so we park among the trucks. We try to find a spot out of the way in a corner some place but are not always successful. In that case we always leave the slides in. Truck movements are continuous and we want to be good citizens and share the space with them.

I have only been in one truck stop where an obviously annoyed neighbor spit a large wad of tobacco on the drivers door of the truck!

When it comes to using slide-outs in Rest Areas, there is no "of course you can" or "of course you can't".

This I-30 Rest Area just west of Malvern, Arkansas is an example where good judgment must prevail.

I used my slide out less than a foot (out of 3 feet) to avoid blocking the sidewalk.

At full 3 foot slide-out deployment, it's likely to piss off somebody walking down the sidewalk at 2 a.m. when you have blocked the sidewalk.

If you have slide-outs on the other side, they would obstruct traffic in the acceleration lane to merge back on to the interstate highway.

I find this to be a somewhat dangerous rest area for camping and avoid it if I don't need the rest.

I try to leave the Rest Stops to the Truckers who are out there trying to make a living. They have few options on where they can park a big rig and get some rest, and why to I need to block a space that they need. Also I have stopped in Rest Areas where armed guards patrolled 24 hours a day. Not good neighborhoods.

Even some Walmarts are located in some not so nice neighborhoods. And there you sit looking like the fat cats you are. Sleep well.

Instead we plan our travels so that we are in a good campground by suppertime and will be getting a good nights sleep.
