Smoke Detector Age
Today I removed my smoke detector to install new battery. I read on the label that SD should be replaced every ten years. Date on the label reads 2002. Off to wallyworld to buy SD. Come to think of it my house is ten years old...guess I had better look at those also. John

A good catch and a very good reminder. I replace my home smoke detector as a result of this reminder, so thank you.

They now say every 6-8 years, I replaced ours a couple years ago. Had trouble finding ones that were short enough to clear the cabinet doors though.

Is that a smoke detector? My wife thinks it is a timer for the toaster oven.

smoke / carbon monoxide detectors
imho just retired (10 mo.) as electrican. if you don't have a carbon monoxide detector, i'd install the combos smoke / carbon monoxide detectors. national electrical code for homes is manditory, that homes have both, on all new and remodels ( i use the combo units ). saftey first.

That's a good idea, but it's hard to find the combination type with a photoelectric type smoke detector. All I have been able to find have the ionization detector, which I would never use in a home or RV. In independent lab tests they have taken as much as 2 hours to alarm while enveloped in thick black smoke from a smoldering type fire. The ionization type are designed for fast-burning fires that develop a lot of heat quickly. The photoelectric type can also be used in the kitchen as long as you keep it a decent distance from the stove. I owned an alarm business which we ran for 36 years, installing all kinds of systems, and I NEVER installed anything but the photoelectric type detectors in residences.
Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

I bought a Kidde dual ion/photo unit from HD for ~$23 last week.
Dual Sensor Smoke Alarm Battery Operated-21008065 at The Home Depot
My S&B has a photo type and the MH was a ion type. I moved the MH one inside my S&B and installed the dual unit in my MH. The MH also has a CO detector above the control panel. I didn't ask, but my bet would be that, after the news storys, sales of detectors jumped. The news story on the Today show showed them putting a soldering in a soft. It smoldered for over 30 minutes before setting off the ionization alarm, and that was after it flamed up.

I was referring to what WONDERER1 said about a combination smoke/CO detector, not the dual sensor smoke that you mention.
