Some people are real pigs

We swapped campsites today, we picked up an extra night at topsail near Destin fl. The good news was the site we were moving to was empty at the crack of dawn. No waiting til 1pm the official check out time. The bad news is these slobs left dozens of beer caps and cigarette butts behind. Many of the butts just flicked into the brush without even being snuffed out. The sad part was when I went to the office to tell them I'd cleared out of our previous site I told them about the mess left behind. The woman just sighed and said its so common now they've gotten immune to it. Too bad since this is such a beautiful place

I know some campground managers reservation software can be flagged to put last names or home addresses so mgmt can screen those guys if the ever make reservations again. Too bad.

Ask if you can move back into the site you were in...(I hear that the people who were there last weren't pigs).

This is a very strange reply. You mean they were just going to leave it as is? Since you moved to the site at the crack of dawn, I would think that the volunteer just didn't have time to clean it up before you got there. But, yes, the previous campers were slobs.

When we volunteered in parks that was definitely one of our chores - cleaning the campsite when someone vacated it. That meant picking up every cigarette butt, drink can tab, pieces of cellophane or paper floating around, bread bag twisties, etc. In addition, we cleaned out the firepit and that's where the 'disgusting' part came....some folks treat the campfire pit as a garbage dump - bottles, cans, foil, Styrofoam, leftover food that they don't want to take along and use, baby diapers. Yes, some people are definitely slobs. I always wonder if they would complain if they came to a campsite left like that.

As we traveled around and found ourselves in campsites like this, we just automatically got a bag and started picking up. We do so along hiking trails, also. People think nothing of tossing their water bottle. Really...how difficult is it to carry it out and put it in a proper disposal place?

Being a campground host, we see it all. Some folks think the firering is a garbage oit or a place for cigarette butts.

But we have run across a few state parks that the LEO will take a photo of the mess and mail the slobs a citation for littering. I wish more would do the ticket. After a few tickets, people would begin to learn.

Yes, there are a Few that do insult pigs. (4 legged animal)

and the OP did not give the volunteers a chance to clean up the mess.

check out at 12:00 , check in at 2:00,,, 2 hours is for cleaning.. my opinion.

being and OLD cub scoot.. area is to be better after you depart, then when you arrive.
I carry a shovel, rake, trash bags.

I agree.

If the OP had waited until the check-in time it's likely that the pig mess would have been cleaned up before he occupied the site.

Whenever I'm allowed occupy a site before the official check-in time, (or if I take advantage of any other preferential treatment), I consider myself lucky.

However I do have this question for the OP:
Was the mess satisfactorily cleaned up by the time the official check-in time arrived?

I'm surprised they didn't get upset with you for moving to the site before they said you could. One of my many times staying over a weekend at John Pennekamp state park down the keys, I had to reserve one site for two nights and a different site for a third night, so I could put a three night stay together.. I moved to the second site after the people vacated that site, before getting the OK from the office. When I went up to the ranger station, the ranger went ballistic because I had moved before getting the OK.

Truth is the volunteers should not have to clean a site when it is vacated. The campers should clean it.

Volunteers have plenty to do with out having to clean up every site.

I would love to see the parks start banning slobs from the parks. It can be noted in the reservation system if people are pigs.

Amazing!! The OP posted what he saw as a problem and many of you jumped all over him as is happening more and more here. You did this without the benefit of having any more information then the basics. You, first of all, don't know whether he had permission to move early. Secondly, you also do not know if this CG does a good job of campsite policing between campers - my history over 40 years is that some do, others wont/can't.

I just really think the whole thing wasn't worth mentioning. Yep, there are people not as neat as others. Maybe the campsite would have been cleaned up before normal occupancy time, maybe not. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
