I was thinking the same thing, knock on the door and he still shoots you. A knock on the door is not a threat, is it?

Fortunately I was able to keep the situation from going sideways and they moved on. It was not my day to go that day.
The state parks recently changed the law to allow concealed carry and I for sure understand why.

I didn't no we were talking opsec, mainly because I've never heard if it.

How paranoid are you? You can look out a window and see if it is friends, if not, don't answer the door.

I like your thinking. Yes, I'm licensed to carry, but I'm not paranoid that everyone is out to get me or my family.

I think it is, at least impolite to pigeon hole people as paranoid just because you do not agree with them.
You do not know their life history. I know women who have been raped, would you say they are paranoid just because they are afraid to walk out alone down a dark street?
I know people who have been the victims of a home invasion. Would you call those people paranoid because they use a home security system now?
I know people who didn't lock their home and car doors until they their home was robbed or car stolen. Are they paranoid because they now use locks?
The people who learn from their experiences and from the experiences of others are not paranoid they are wise.
"Learn from the mistakes of others. You can’t live long enough to make them all yourself."

Someone tried to scam me
I am awake and aware. Call it what you want. With today's technology there is no excuse for the "pop in" (uninvited guest showing up unexpectedly).
I think the norm now a days is for kids to sale cookies at the entrance to shopping centers (public places) or to friends and family.
This conversation is about thieves, con-men, bait and switch teams.
The naysayers are perfect examples of society and our different areas of operation.
Remember, as you are reading this people are being taken advantage of.
I'm ok if you are ok.
Cross me and I'm your worst nightmare.

I don't feel safe anymore either, especially at home. Too many petty crimes, and not enough police to investigate. Had two incidences in the last 2 years, and both times the police said unless someone was shot and killed, we just don't have the man power to round up people. (hit & run , and RV was broken into)
I try to get to know my neighbors, problem is no one trusts each other and stays locked up in their homes....
A word that goes around is "crimes of opportunity". I think the original poster had possibly the attempted start of a crime.

It also is a poor way to live ones life to always feel that you have to lock the barn without any really justification. You can give people the benefit of the doubt without having to be stupid about it.
I don't fall for scams because they are usually too transparent. If anyone, even someone purporting to be my bank, asks for info unexpectedly, I will call my bank myself and verify before I do anything else. Same is true for any phone call, email or message that asks for anything personal. I've received a number of such "requests", and not one has ever been legit. I've even had really stupid crooks try to scam me saying that they are from a bank or company that I've never done business with in my life.

agree.....I'm not "paranoid" at all. I'm suspect of strangers and don't trust anyone I don't know. We have people pull in a few times a year with car trouble, flats, ect ect. I always go out to help them and lend my tools or whatever. That doesn't mean I don't approach them cautiously until I figure out what's going on and I don't invite them in my house. I also make sure they all get a good look at the St Bernard looking at them through a window or door. It's not being paranoid.....it's being smart and safe. This isn't about me. I'm a big guy that's had to take care of myself more than a few times in life. I'm perfectly capable of handling myself. I have 3 kids that my number 1 job is to protect and keep safe. That's what it's about. I don't care if the pope mobile pulls in the drive with the pope riding in the bubble.....I'm still going to approach cautiously and he ain't getting in my house either.

And who is better to make that decision? You or the person who lives near and owns the barn?

Geez, I have been scammed many times. Mostly by RV dealers, even Poulsbo RV tried to scam me one time, that was close.

When we bought our new TT from CW last year and after we agreed on price I got them to throw in a wired up second battery and a electric tongue jack. [emoji4]

A couple years ago, when we still lived in town, we had a guy just walk down our driveway towards our garage. The garage sat behind our house on one side. I was sitting there at my desk, and one of our dogs started barking and looking towards the kitchen windows. It was nice out, so all the windows were open, and I guess that the dog heard the guy walk down the drive.
Anyway, I get up and look out the window to see this young guy standing at the gate beside our garage and looking into our back yard. I hollered out "What do you want?" And this guy walked back around to our front door and started in some really poorly thought out "sales pitch", through our still closed front screen door. It was pretty obvious to me he was just out casing properties, and was using this sales pitch thing to try and get away with it.
All this time, one of our Labrador retrievers was just going bonkers, growling, snarling, and trying very hard to get loose from my grip on his collar. This was not like this dog's temperament at all. He was normally very friendly to everyone, but even he could pick up the "bad guy" vibe on this guy.
I wasn't giving this guy any traction, and telling him I wasn't interested, but he wouldn't take "no" for an answer. Then he did a really stupid thing and reached for the screen door knob. My Lab just about jerked my arm out of it's socket, stood on his back legs and bared all his teeth. I've never seen him do that, ever (and he never has since either).
I finally told the guy, "My dog doesn't like you..... I don't like you either..... He weighs 105 pounds..... If I let go of his collar, he'll be through that screen door like tissue paper. And I guarantee you he'll be on you before you can make the bottom of the stairs. You need to leave, and leave now..... Don't come back."
The guy stopped talking, stared at the dog briefly, who was still VERY much wanting to get free of me, and left.
I have no doubts that that guy was up to no good, and was out casing houses. We have 4 Labradors, combined weight 350 pounds. If they can get past that, there's a .45 on my dresser and a .38 on the nightstand.
I like living out of town now. Our neighbors are great, and we look after each other's places all the time, including watching them if either of us is out of town. We live outside town, but we do live along the highway. But it's quiet enough that we hear anyone coming up, and no one gets past the dog's hearing.
