Hello all
Just a comment on the questions asked in this poll. If you set up a poll there are only 4 questions you can ask. (my reading of setting it up).
I figured question 1 would inspire those answering question 3 to get a surge protector.
Question 2 is meant (tho poorly worded) yes I use a surge protector.
Results might be tainted but nothing is perfect.

I lost all of the electronics in my 1st RV from some electrical malfunction, not lightning. I fried the DISH receiver and the Microwave in this RV. I now have a SurgeGuard. If you don't see the need for one that is your choice, but I won't plug in my RV without one.

I never have had a problem and would probably have never bought protection but my neighbor was getting out of RV'ing and let me have his for a song. Glad to have it but I don't know if I would ever have spent the big bucks.

Just a note, the option of 4 choices is a default, you can have more than 4 options when you set up the poll.
Most polls result in suggestions of, you should have more options, or you have worded your options differently, etc.
Sometimes the OP starts a new poll or another member starts a poll with the options they desire.
There's just too many thoughts on how a poll should look to please everyone.

Didn't have one on my first two RVs, no failures but I have since changed my mind about their value. Mine is hard wired, I voted #2.

Surge protectors wont always protect you. Had lighting hit near by- took out tv-radios,tank level,heater controls. Never poped a breaker or burnt a fuse. Power surge came through the ground.

Highly recommended that you get and EMS solution to protect your valuable RV systems. Never mind that you have an insurance policy.

From 1976, with 7 RV's never had a surge protector, never had a problem.
Got the MH, and got the surge protector, as insurance......Besides Murphy spoke to me........a little voice said,,,,,,,
although you have had a good run,,,,,don't tempt the electric ghost! Have Safe Electric, it may not be the only charge you get, but it will do the most damage. Then you will have to see the Electric Dr.,,,,and take those shots and pills......Think Safe Electric.

You are absolutely correct. The closer a lightning strike is to your rv the more likely your surge protection may fail. The joules rating is how much energy your surge protector will block, the higher the number the better the protection. It's possible a surge can have more energy than the protector is capable of blocking and could damage your protector and your equipment.

I am answering incorrectly since my option isn't available. I haven't had one since I bought the coach, but got one after reading the horror stories here. Peace if mind goes a long way for my comfort.

$300 to $400 to protect $5000 to $10000 or more in electronics makes sense to me. My problems so far have been with electrical panels, not with lightning. Maybe I have just been unlucky?
