Surge protection - progressive ems question

Hey all so I happened across an AMAZINGLY UNBELIEVABLE deal on a New Open Box Progressive Industries EMS on eBay... the listing said it was the EMS-HW30C and the box that it came in was for the EMS-HW30C however the seller must not have opened the box because to my surprise when I opened the box there was an EMS-HW50C in it or at least that's what the lid says on the unit itself.

I currently have a 30A TT and am wondering if running the EMS-HW50C will give me any problems at all or will open the door for any potential problems. Also does anybody know how to confirm that the lid didn't get switched and it has EMS-HW30C internals with a lid from an EMS-HW50C?

I am really hoping that it will work but look forward to hearing back from you all! Thanks in advance for any insight folks can provide.

I believe with the 30 amp will have 3 wiring lugs on each side and the 50 amp will have 4. Beyond that, I dunno. A phone call to Progressive on Monday would provide the best definitive answer. They are great people and will be glad to answer all of your questions.

The 50 amp unit will also have two current sensing rings (one for each hot leg) and the 30 amp unit has one current sensing ring.

Just purchase a 30A adapter and be happy. If you ever upgrade to a 50A unit you will already have electrical protection.

No worries - The 50A EMS will work fine. You just need a 30/50 Adapter to plug the RV cord into it, and a 50/30 Adapter if yu want to use a 30A outlet on the campsite. The 30/50 adapter will place the entire 30A load on one of the two 50A legs, but that's a normal thing when using a 50A outlet. And when the EMS is plugged to a 30A outlet via the 50/30 adapter, the single 30A hot feeds both hots of the EMS.

And now you are ready for your next rig! Time to go shopping!!!

The one that was received was a hard wired unit, not plug and play.

Yea both the EMS-HW30C and EMS-HW50C are both hard wired models that's why unfortunately it's not as easy as just buying an adapter.

I actually called PI yesterday... a few things that upset me. They say since I bought it New Open Box on eBay they won't warranty it. Also when I told them about it appearing to be a 50A model in a 30A box all they kept saying was oh you need to send us that unit and we'll send you the 30A.

I was not impressed with their customer service and also the reason I came here looking for answers.

For PI to warranty it, you have to buy it from an authorized distributor. Did you check the seller? I doubt eBay is an authorized distributor.

Since it's a hard wired unit, I don't think you're going to be able to retrofit it. Can't you return it?

I think it might work if you follow the mounting instructions and just leave the one terminal empty and ring empty. I think that it will just think you are hooked to a 30 amp service.

If they are willing to swap it out for a 30A unit, it could solve all your problems. Sure the 50A is more expensive but you need a 30A unit. If you get the 30A from them, they will warranty it.

Well I've confirmed that it is indeed a 50A model as it has 2 current sensing rings and 3 wires going into the contractor where the 30A model has a single current sensing ring and only 2 wires going into the contractor.

I could send it back to them and just get the 30A version but would like to keep it because if/when we upgrade in the future I won't have to go out and spend that money again.

I just think it's silly that they won't warranty a unit based on where it is sold. To me new is new. Yes it is open box but I could go to Amazon and get an open box/damaged box brand new item. Do they not warranty those either?

I feel like it can be used as I've read that others have done this before (buy the 50A version knowing they'll need it in the future) and used it on a TT I just need to know for sure how to wire it up. Anyhow I believe if I just leave the one contractor position open on ea side I will be in business but will call PI tomorrow to confirm.

One thing that popped into my mind reading you last post. Think ahead as to how you will deal with having a severed power shore line when you do trade. Put connectors on each end or splice it back together? Then I think that maybe for you to get a 30 and sit on this one until you need the 50, but then what if the new ones have been upgraded? Decisions, decisions.... but you don't want for to turn into .

Bottom line, do what suits you, but then again, maybe you can mount it and then when you find a GREAT deal on a 30, get it and swap and hang on to the 50.

If I have served to only confuse you more, my job here is done.
