Our 2011 40' Phaeton had a 22,000# rear axle. We pulled a 9500# trailer that had a 1000# dead weight on the tongue. When I ran it across a scale the rear axle was at 22,300#. It handled it, but as you can see, it was maxed out. Now, our 43' tag coach just plays with that same weight. It's carrying 27,000#s on a pair of axles rated at 35,000#s

I think an issue is being missed here. We had a 36' Monaco Diplomat (non-tag) that took a lot of added on handling components to get the 36' (short coach) to handle well. The only good thing was that there was only about 18000 pounds on the 20000 pound rear axle (loaded).

We owned the Diplomat from 2005-2014 and I saw that from about 2005 through maybe 2009/10, coaches were really pushing the limits (no tag) on the rear axles. A lot of so called 40' coaches were measuring anywhere from 40' - 42' They were really overloading the rear axles, leaving very little CCC. After about 2009 and I think some complaining by owners, the tags started to become more prevalent on 40's.

When we bought our new coach we definitely wanted a tag so that we were not maxing out an axle on a 40+ footer. The Government says that no axle will weigh more than 20000 pounds, but gives a 23000 pound exception on motor homes.

Very wordy, but my point.....I think that many coaches that are 40' or more really need a tag to carry the weight. I'm not talking about a lightweight low end coach, but a medium to high quality DP.

Just my opinion and why my new coach has a tag.

Well towing a 2300lb Miata I guess there's no need what so ever

It all depends on the numbers...GVWR, GAWR, GCWR, tongue weight, tow ratings, etc.

The tow rating is the lower of:

1. GCWR minus tow vehicle's actual weight.

2. Hitch capacity.

3. Coach tow rating.

4. Chassis maker's tow rating.
