This simply isn't true. For nonresidents, you can avoid paying California sales tax *IF* you take out-of-state delivery...even if you have a loan on the vehicle.

We've purchased both an RV and an automobile in California, both with loans on them. We didn't pay California sales tax nor did we register the vehicles in California. We did take out-of-state delivery on both vehicles, however.

I'm surprised that the dealer from whom you were trying to purchase the vehicle wasn't aware of the out-of-state delivery rules!

It would be much easier to just NOT buy in Kalifornia. If there is a way to screw it up or make it expensive, they have figured out a way to do it.

I hate it here...if I can just make it a few more years to retirement, then I'll be out of here.

After knowing what Ca. is trying to do to a family friend regarding a totally bogus tax bill, I would say anywhere but there.
