The Trials of Selling an RV

When we sold our B+, we listed it on RV Trader on a Wednesday. The following Sunday, we had a buyer. That was pretty easy. When we listed our G'town, nothing. For weeks. I relisted but sprung for the upgrade and nothing for a couple of weeks then BAM. Call after call..... people requesting pics of this & that & I sent 100's of pics. Emails back & forth. Montana, New York, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana....

Some had to sell theirs before buying another (we know all about that!), some said they only had budgeted for X amount which was $10-15K under what we were asking....Really? One person asked all sorts of questions, requested a billion pics, wanted to know this & that...then says he was starting a business and wasn't able to buy anything right now.

In the past 2 weeks, we've shown our coach 8 times. We had offers from a few which we declined, we never heard back from others and sometime in there Montana called and said they'd sold theirs and were still really interested in ours. THEN they apparently looked at the map and decided 1800 miles was too far to drive to look at it.

2 couples were just starting their search and were just looking to see what was available. That's okay. We were happy to talk to them about camping & traveling.

Thursday, we showed it to a couple and they said they'd take it at what we were asking! They needed the VIN number & some other info which I emailed to them Thursday evening and we've heard nothing from them. Yesterday another couple looked at it even though we told them we'd had a commitment and asked that we call them if the deal falls through. We just had another call from someone that wants to come tonight to look at it and can write us a check tonight.

DH told him to come on if he wanted to but that until we heard differently from the couple that we made the deal with that we would consider it sold to them.

WHEW... This is wearing me out! I'll be glad when it's over.

I just hope the couple that said they'd take it really will!

Why are you telling others you have a deal ? Until you have a deposit , you don't have a deal IMO.

Until you have the check in your hand there is no deal. But, good luck.

/\This, and even with a deposit there would be an agreed upon time that other offers would be excluded.

I wouldn't take a check from my own brother. Unless its a cashiers check and I can call their bank and verify the check is real. Otherwise its cash or bank transfer!!! Selling a Rv is the worst, so many people just window shopping or thinking they are gonna low ball you. I make my adds straight and to the point if your just looking don't waste my time and the price listed is firm don't even ask. Keeps a ton of the time wasters away

I'm worried about that but DH said he'd hold it for them.

First off; DO NOT TAKE A CHECK - UNLESS and only unless you keep the vehicle until the check has cleared your bank. Cashier's and certified checks aren't much safer today either.

We've been selling at art & craft shows for years with a Square account that anyone can easily get for their own personal use to take debit & credit cards. Although you may not want to loose the roughly 2% Square would charge, I'd look at it as peace of mind insurance.

Finally, like others have said, you have no assurances of any kind of deal until you've got a substantial deposit (10% or better) in your hands.

If you watch Shark Tank, think about what Kevin (or any of them) would do with nothing but a sort 'o, kind 'o, promise, er...commitment. Kind of like asking a girl to the prom and she tells you yes...unless I do something else.

Motorhomes might be second to boats as to buyers not doing what they thought they wanted to do when they were sober.

Unless you demand several thousand deposit via PayPay or otherwise, you don't have a deal////////////////////////especially if the buyer doesn't press you for a binding contract.

Did the buyer press you? If not, did you press him? why not? This is business, not dating.

Well, dang! Consider me pummeled.

DH talked to the couple longer than I did and they did make a cash offer to hold it. DH didn't take it though and I'm not sure why but he is confident that they will follow through.

If not, I'll send him here to be pummeled too.

Guess it's not sold until $ appears. Lots of tire kickers. When they say they want it it's time to make the move...bank or some financial institution. Hold title/mh until money clears. Good luck.

I would take a deposit, but be very leery of any kind of cheque. Its also a huge commitment for folks which might be something to do with the no shows. Good luck with the sale.

Golly, we're in the process of cleaning ours out to sell. Ye old lung condition has slowed me down too much so our 14 year old (bought new) has to go. Not looking forward to the selling process.
