I have a year old Beaver coach with A Thetford tolet. We get a bad odor in the potti room when the room warms up. The smell is like urane odor somthing simular. I have RV'd for 45 years and have not had this problem. I also had Thetford toilets in my last two Motorhomes. This has occured since the coach was new. After lots of cleaning, with no improvement, I belive this oder is from the plastic seat or the plastic cover around the bottom of the bowl. Has any one experienced or heard of this problem?

Jorjan, first let me welcome you to iRV2.com. We are glad to have you join us here and we look forward to reading of your adventures and experiences. Certainly you could have stains under the plastic cowl of the pedastal. You may have to pull the toilet to investigate.
It could also be an open overflow drain that goes around the flap valve. Try this first; to fill the trap back in this drain, just fill the bowl to the top of the inner rim to force water down the over flow.
Do you also have a gray water vent possibly in the same area under a sink? You may have a bad vent valve that is not sealing back also.
Let us know what you find.

We ran into the same problem a while back. If you have a china bowl, there will probably be a plastic cowl at the base as RV Wizard says. Ours is held on by velcro and is easy to remove - we just didn't know the cowl was even a separate piece until I took a closer look. Cleaning under the there each week with some disinfecting wipes seems to have solved our problem.

Also, under the cowl on our toilet there is a metal ring that holds the upper and lower halves of the toilet together. Under the ring are the rubber seals that seal against the flush ball. Check to make sure this joint isn't leaking. If it is, tightening the metal ring may solve the problem, but you may need new seals.

We were experiencing somewhat of the same problem, and after reading this, we filled the bowl to the rim to let clean water flow down the overflow channel, and it stopped the odor problem.

THanks for letting us know!

Pat
