Tip???
Curious as to how many of you would tip the man who washes and waxes your RV? I am paying a guy $300 to wash and wax, but need to know if I should tip him upon completion, and if so, how much? Thanks everyone!

Why tip? A tip is for extraordinary service, not for just doing the job. Tipping has gotten out of hand in this country. They want a $15 min wage then tips for just doing what they're paid for. A waitperson here already makes $9.47/hr, get a four $5 tips and they make almost $30 an hour which is what I was making in 1999 when I retired with an AA in Computers and the equiv of a Masters in civil engineering and I haven't gotten a raise since!

I've always tipped the guy at the car wash. YMMV.
I do agree that tipping has gotten out of hand in some places. A tip jar at Starbucks, any fast food restaurant, or where you buy the tickets for any tourist attraction is nonsense.

Washing and waxing your RV is a LOT of work. If it was me, and the guy did a great job, I'd probably throw him a $20. If it's a shop or business, then no.
What got me the other day was I went into a liquor store and picked up a few bottles, went to the till with them, used my card in the reader and up pops the tip option! For what? I did all the work! You mean you want a tip for ringing in my purchase? Not a chance! Get a real job!

Is he the owner/operator or is he the employee?
Owner/operator - no
Employee - your call

Just like anything else tips are crazy now.
But...
If the charge is a fixed charge by the foot or whatever and the service is also fixed meaning only certian things done and the person does additional things or stated things Abo e and beyond what was paid for or expected and does NOT expect a tip then maybe hand them one.
A cash card for a nearby food place with a couple lunches worth of funds is often cheap but many of us do work for food and often a free lunch means a bunch.

Thank you all for the great insight. The man doing the job is the owner of the business, however, I think a great job deserves a $20 tip. I always love getting advice on this site!

I think a tip is always appropriate for exceptional service, but I would not tip the RV detail guy under normal circumstances.

The kid who detailed my RV today was just an employee and did a real nice job. He was polite, on time, and very professional. I tipped him $20 and he seemed very thankful.

Where are you that a wash and wax cost $300? And if you are going to TIP, why only $20, that's only 6 2/3%, kind of a slap in the face these days.

The kid probably makes $10 per hour. Probably never gets a tip. He's not in the serving industry so doesn't expect one.
In a case like this he probably felt good about doing a job because he got rewarded for it.
Do you think the cashier at Safeway deserves a 15% tip?
How about your mechanic.
I think the $20 tip was a nice gesture. Nothing to feel guilty about.

I wasn't referring to the Kid, he didn't make $300. Yes a $20 tip was well appreciated.
I don't tip at the grocery store or RV repair shops. Mechanics are charging $100-$180 an hour and don't reimburse you for all the parts they replaced that didn't fix the problem.

I just had mine done for $320.00, and yes, I tipped the guy (owner/worker) $20.00 for what I considered a mediocre job. No, I shouldn't have, and no, I won't next time. And no, I won't be taking it back there.
