I've been guided a few times, and I appreciate it when it's been a long drive and I'm flat out tired. If they are super nice and helpful, I have thanked them whole heartedly. I've never considered tipping them, and have not yet experienced the long pause as if they were expecting a tip. That just seems to be their job.

Same here only been to one place in Oregon where they escorted you to your site. We've been there several times and they never wait around for a tip. They usually just drive thru the spot and continue on while you park. Although this is a very nice park, probably the nicest we have ever stayed in, it is attached to an Indian Casino and was only $35 a night so I don't consider that a high end park. I think they are just making sure you get to your spot with no problems or other people parking their toads there ect.

I'm personally completely against tipping. So, I say no way.

As a corporate executive, I'm professionally against tipping. I believe that people should be paid what they are worth for the job that they do, and that they should not expect or rely on tips. As a corporation, my business enforces the practice by not tipping, or associating with companies that expect tips, or expect their employees to collect tips.

When we cater meals, for example, we inform the caterers of our policy and pay accordingly.

Clear cut and simple.

That's one of the things I like about Japan. There's no tipping there.

I am one of those guys that leads you to your site. Once at the site, I point out the sewer, electric, water, cable hook-up, etc. just as a courtesy (and ensure all the circuit breakers on the pedestal are OFF). I talk a little with them, ask how long there staying, pet their dogs, yadda, yadda, yadda. If asked will give directions to local eating places, sites, etc. Not always, but sometimes, folks have questions about what they were told in the office during check-in; Clarifying rules, one-way roads, how to get out of the park the next day, where the dumpster is, etc. Just try to make them feel welcome and glad that they picked this RV park to stop at.

I politely turn down tips, telling them I am a work camper and RV'er just like them. One time I did take a tip because nothing short of an argument was going to stop the guy from giving me 5 bucks!!!

I'm guessing there are not a lot of bartenders and waiters/waitresses that smile and welcome you back!

The word TIP came from the letters T-I-P which meant: To Insure Promptness.
Originally used to "bribe" the Maitre de to get you quicker service. Turns out it didn't guarantee anything so people held back on "tipping" until after the meal or service.

I think some are missing the point about guiding you to your site. I don't think it's to save the park from damage, but as a courtesy. When I was a kid, we use to camp at Antler's Resort in northern California. The owner always escorted you to your site and helped you back in if necessary.

Many years ago, we looked at buying a campground. One of the things that always stuck in my head, was the escort service. To me, it added a personal touch that I would definitely want to incorporate into any campground I would own.

Amenities are nice, but great service is never forgotten.

We've been escorted many times, but I've never thought of it as a situation where I should tip.

This made me laugh (not the whole post), just the term that's highlighted. "Escort service" has a different meaning nowadays.

Having worked in parks, they don't expect tips.

I told the office at one place that I didn't need an escort, but they insisted saying that it was easier for us in case someone had a car parked in the spot, was connected to the wrong pedestal because it was closer, had any questions when we got there, especially if we would ask to move, direct traffic if necessary, etc. This way we wouldn't have to go back to the office for help. They also said by driving around they can check on things, answer other people's questions and get to see if there would be any potential problems that night.

Yes, most KOA's give an escort, but I didn't get one in Newburg NY two weeks ago.

Thanks for pointing that out!

Not sure I could afford that campground, but I might be tempted to check out and check back in daily.

Actually, I'm friends with the bartenders where I frequent, and they do know my name and welcome me back every time. They know that I do not tip because I told them so.

The waitresses that recognize me at various restaurants, treat me great.

Perhaps it's the Christmas and Birthday gifts, (or a card), that I give helps them remember me more than the measly tips that everyone else leaves?

And, when I'm at the Elk's lodge all tips go straight to the philanthropy, so the bartender there welcomes me also!

That, right there, is the last laugh! ---->
