Remember that the Feds now mandate that a restaurant keep track of how much $ the server serves and charges the wait staff 10% of that since the servers were not reporting their tips. So if you do't tip 10% they are losing money on your food.

You don't know the cruise line industry very well, do you? It's not a "rip off". It's the cost of running a cruise ship. However they won't include the full cost of the wages it takes into your fare. They advertise the low fare, to sell them obviously, then put the wages into the tips. If you saw the real price up front at the advertised fare price, you might not book, right? You DON'T have to pay the tip. You can withhold it if you are that cheap. It's amazing to me people complain about the tips, but willingly book the trip anyway. It's the cost of the trip people! Either as part of a higher priced fare, or a lower advertised fare and the tip added later. Accept the total cost or stay home! I'd actually prefer more people stay home. The port cities are waaaaay too crowded.

There are restaurants in the cities that you have to pay to be on the wait-staff. The wait staff usually makes more than $100 dollars an evening in tips. That sounds like a lot but by the time the owners deduct their monthly fees for working there, it is hard for them to make a living wage. Then there are owners/managers who should pay their staff more than they do. Most of the restaurants take the tip money and split it evenly at the end of the day. That is why I don't leave a tip on my credit card. I hand it to the waiter/waitress in person. If they report the tip, that is up to them. My advice is pocket it and forget it. I don't like having to pay anyone who makes minimum wage and the customer is expected to make up the difference in what the owner pays. If they can't afford to be in business, they should get out. Been a waitress, babysitter, dark room technician, personal business manager and paralegal through the years. Waitressing was the worst job and the funniest job I ever had. People are people in all their glory and crap, but, I enjoy them all. I tip according to the situation and how flush my pocketbook is. Sometimes I'm generous, sometimes not. Everybody should make up their own mind about how they handle tipping.

Many waitstaff put the tips in a communal jar and split they at the end.

No and I don't need or want an escort and find the practice a little irritating. So, not too likely to pay extra for it. I understand though - apparently there is a need. I just don't know what it is.

A couple of years ago koa in San Antonio insisted that our escort take us to our spot. He took us the wrong way and made us back in almost 180 degree turn. During this process the mirror on our coach was damaged when we hit an obstruction. Bottomline...the spots were angled for a reason, and I would have never taken us in like that. Furthermore the obstructin that our mirror hit would not had been an issue. After that incident, I follow them on main road...my partner gets out and thanks them and we say "we have it from here"
