Dave Ramsey says not to buy a new car until your net worth is 1 million USD or above. I agree. My new car is a 2000 ZR2 Blazer 2Door with 280,000 miles, which also serves as our toad. My wife has a 2013 Lincoln MKX we bought in April of 2016. I can and do work on my own cars, but just recently put $1400 into the Blazer for E-Brake (toad injury) and AWD repairs, some car payments are more than that.

After visiting the Detroit auto show, with the prices hovering close to hundred thousand dollars for a nice truck; I will stick with used!

I buy a brand new truck every 15 years, whether I need one or not. The sticker shock on my current new truck about did me in. I may have to make this one last 20 years.

Dave Ramsey's advice is a good benchmark. DH and I have bought used and we have bought new, depending on what vehicle we need and for what purpose.

For the business, when the 18-yr old shop vehicle looked like it was finally aging out, we bought a new but previous year model. The dealer was eager to get it off the lot, so had marked it down dramatically. We got a new vehicle with full warranty, plus the bonus $8000 depreciation because it was new, at a price that reflected depreciation. That was a win on every side.

When we have bought used vehicles for our personal use, we usually buy them from people we know well, so we know they were well cared for. However, we have also bought certified pre-owned from a dealer with good success as well.
