Tire question.

I had a sidewall failure on one of the original tires on my motorhome. It was a Goodyear RV tire 245/70 R19.5 with an F rating. The only one I could quickly find to get us back on the road was a Yokohama RY023 truck tire with a G rating. Obviously I would like to only replace the remaining 5 tires with the Yokohama. It is a Newmar BayStar 2902 on an 18000 lb. chassis. Any tire gurus out there with any advice?
Thanks,
Jim Hayes

I am not a tire guru, but my observation over the past several years is that Goodyear and Michelin seem to be the tire most prone to blowouts as reported on the various RV web sites.
I would definitely keep all tires on the coach from the same manufacturer and size.

Michelin and GoodYear have 90%+ of the RV tire business. Of course your going to hear about more problems with them. And of that 90% I'm betting 75% is Michelins.

The Yokohama tire is more of a truck tire, deeper tread more ply's which provides for more carrying capacity. They will probably ride stiffer but you might get by with lower psi to compensate.

You probably will get just as good of service out of these since the tires will age out before wearing out. The most important thing is to make sure tire pressures are right, that's why I have a TPMS. I check it everyday before we leave. I had to put new sensors on last August and checked/balanced all pressures at that time, I haven't lost any psi since then.

Be very careful as you didn't mention where the Blowout occurred- Front or Rear Dual's - as you shouldn't mismatch tire sizes at All. Especially on the Duel's ! For the Short Term.

Keep the yukahamma as a unmounted spare and buy six new matching Michelin's or other more common rv tire. IMHO

Inside rear. 7 yrs old 103 degree day. Properly inflated Goodyear RV tire, always covered, looked great.
Anyone used the Yokohama?

As long as its the right size, there is no reason NOT to use the Yokohamas, G rating or not. And I sincerely doubt you will notice any difference in ride.

In my opinion, most of this "truck tires ride stiffer" is a myth propagated by tire salesmen trying to justify high-priced "RV tires". For example, all of the Michelins tire models recommended for RV use are also used for truck & bus applications.

I've replaced my own Goodyear G670's with Continental HSR2 "truck tires".

Thanks for all the advice. I think I'll go with the Yokohamas. I've had excellent service on my cars. And I'll save a few dollars.

Any company that has a chart that shows how much cracking, checking is acceptable (Michelin) is not OK with me. I accept zero checking or cracking !
P.S. Love my Yokohamas long time ! 40,000 + miles worth !
