Tire Size for 72 Dodge Champion

I have a set of 6.5 rims on the 72 dodge champion but could not find tires cheap for that size so I bought 6" so I could find some cheaper.I'm in need of some info on what size to go with. 235 85 R16? or 255 85 16

I don't think dollar signs should be the first factor to consider in tires for a vehicle you plan to haul loved ones in. I suggest you look at weight capacity as first factor. A blow out on a steer tire can ruin more than your day.

Do you mean you have a set of 16.5" rims and you replaced them with a set of 16" rims?
If so, that was a wise move as 16.5 inch tires are getting harder and harder to find and they are extremely expensive when you do find them.

Our rig had 16.5" tires on it and the size was 8.00xR16.5 LT which where 8 ply rated tires (load range D).

When I replaced them with 16" wheels and tires, the equivalent tire size was a 215/75/R16.

I also went with a 10 ply rated tire (load range E) and am so much happier with the way the rig rides and drives now. I would suggest you do the same for no more difference there is in the price.
