Tires

Does anyone ever just replace their front tires after 7 years. It seems that a tire failure on the front is much worse than the back. If the tires have a lot of tread and no sign of cracking why replace the back ones?

An important consideration is that when a tire blows, it's likely to damage the coach. It can do body damage, rip into electronics, etc. At seven years I start looking for a complete new set of tires.

Plenty of tires newer than 7 years blow out. Always love this topic when it comes up. Also plenty of quality tires blow out as well as China bombs. I've bought both and ran tires well past 7 years, personal preference. Just replaced the front tires on the coach I just bought that were almost 7 years, but the coach came from Arizona and the high temps they have seem to degrade tires a lot faster and I bought quality tires this time, if I had to replace all 6 things might have been different.

I replace my tires when the tire manufacturer recommends replacement.

Losing a rear tire on a 4 tire vehicle is worse than losing a front tire.

Sure some people do that. Some even sooner, e.g. 5 years. It's a risk assessment, not an iron clad rule.

Michelin says their tires are good up to 10 years, but they begin to get suspicious starting at age 5. If you feel you must minimize the chance of a blowout, whether for safety or damage reasons, replace sooner. If you are bent on getting maximum use from the tire, run them longer and accept the greater risk that comes with advancing age. Whatever rows your boat...

Replaced the tires on the '02 DSDP at 10 years and the ones on the Magna at 9 going by the dates on the sidewall. Have never had a blowout on an RV and only one flat and that was one week before I replaced the Magna tires.
Have had only one blowout ever and that was a BadYear on a Jeep. I use Michelins on everything after I wear out what ever came on the vehicle.

Mr D normally pops in and list the different manufactures and their recommendations. But till then, here is Michelin RV Tire recommendation.

I replaced mine at the 10 year mark.

Please remember blow outs are rare considering the millions of them on the road. Read or review what to do it happens.
Yes do replace them by miles or time which ever expires first.

To the OP. I just went through deciding whether to swap out 6 year old tires with 3000 miles on them. It was a very tough decision but after much research and a lot of input from the gang here one poster really said what hit home. He told me it comes down to comfort level (and we all have our own thoughts on this). Is it worth spending every minute of every trip worrying about a blow out or is it worth changing them for piece of mind. For "me" it was worth it. I just got my new Yokohama's installed today and love them.

To your question many truckers do what you are saying BUT they do not risk a rear tire coming apart and ripping all the tanks, wiring and fiberglass apart on their rigs so a much easier decision. I sold my tires to a friend of mine that owns an excavation company he will throw those on a low boy if they blow no big deal so worth what he gave me for them. But he would not put the on his motor home.

I replace tires at 7 years. I have had three blowouts on motorhomes, all Michelin Radials, 2 were 5 years old and on the inside back, one rt front 3 years old.

So the oldest tires you had blow out were 5 years old, and you've had a 3 year old front tire blow out, but you still think tires should be replaced at 7 years old?

Hmmmmmmm.
