I just read all 14 posts concerning this Motorhome purchase and title problem.
If this was my transaction I would cancel the entire deal, find another RV dealer and perhaps even another maker. After all this is not the only Motorhome on planet earth!....Money talks....take a walk!.....I often wonder why anyone would tolerate such confusion and abuse from any RV dealership!
You are the customer and the dealership should be bending over backwards to make this transaction as smooth as possible....time has long passed for you to cut and run!!!

In the automotive business what is used to title a vehicle is a "CERTIFICATE OF ORIGIN". That should tell the state exactly what it is. Does the dealer have it? They won't title a car in many States without one......

The title application should state exactly what the MSO says for the make and model.

The MSO comes from Forest River, and they will not reissue another MSO unless the original was destroyed--which is not the case.

The problem some states have is valuation for future ad valorem taxes--based on the NADA RV Guide. If a new model is not shown in the guidebook, it throws the license branch into a tizzy. Many license branches will take a competitive make unit for a baseline on what the coach's value is. The future taxes will be based on a percentage of the original valuation--depreciating it by a set percentage yearly.

As far as insurance goes, the VIN is the most important description.

I bought a new fifth wheel trailer last year that was too new a brand to be in the NADA Guide. The license branch used a competitive brand, but a lesser name model--as a baseline value. I should come out better in the long run on taxation.

We were too far into the deal to pull out. I know exactly what you are saying.

My arguments are turning toward Forest River. If they are not recognizing Coachmen as a manufacturer, then Coachmen ceases to exist. If Encounter is the manufacturer then they have a lot of advertising to change. NADA recognizes Coachmen by Forest River, not Encounter or Encounter by Forest River.

Yes, the dealer should have gone to Forest River and addressed this issue. However, if it takes 8 weeks to change an MSO, then their inventory is locked, can't sell a thing until new MSO's start showing up. They didn't want that. They did whatever they had to get me what I thought was the correct way, be it right or wrong. When I did get plates the licence bureau put Coachmen in the Make field, not the Make Description field. A mess but it all worked out.

Thanks

Fred
