I here most states still take cash. However with the devaluation of the dollar some are looking at other options.

Actually, some of our toll roads here in Houston are EZ Tag only - the Westpark Tollway, for instance. No attendants, no toll booths, just electronic EZ Tag readers.

Rusty we ran into that in Denver where 70 turns to the north prior to the 25 interchange. No one in site and they say they will bill you. We were towing the Element and a couple of months later we get the promised notication for both vehicles as if they were separated. I guess it must be cheaper for them to do the research and auto billing than pay a toll gate keeper.

Correct. The only electronic toll collection devices usable in Florida are:

SunPass - Good statewide on electronic toll collection roads and bridges
E-Pass - Good on the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority system
Leeway - Good on Lee County toll bridges

EZ Pass, TXTag, and several other toll collection facilities may have similar technology, but the systems are NOT interconnected to Florida's electronic toll system.

As for the other question regarding out of state or Canadian drivers using the Florida toll roads and bridges:

If the facility is using "Toll By Plate", and you don't have an active SunPass transponder, you will receive a bill from the state of Florida, along with a $2.50 administrative fee which covers all Toll By Plate use in a given month. Toll By Plate is only available on the Homestead Extension of the Florida Turnpike, but is being rolled out statewide in the next few years.

If the facility is not Toll By Plate, you will receive a uniform traffic citation, where you can pay the toll and a penalty of $100. Don't pay it and it jumps to the toll plus $180. Go before a judge and he can fine you up to $500.

The notice of violation gets mailed out to anyone from anywhere who uses the toll roads and bridges and does not pay the toll either at the toll booth (being phased out statewide) or electronically with SunPass, E-Pass, or LeeWay.

Further info is at the SunPass web site.

That's the road I was on, and the sign I saw.
And iPass works anywhere that EZpass does.

Yes! Except parking lots. Ipass does work on E-ZPass toll roads and bridges. Conversely: If you’re an E-ZPass holder, you too can use the Chicago Skyway as well as the Illinois Tollway System.

BTW if your EZPass is configured properly you will likely be charged the correct toll for the actual weight of our vehicle. We found that some toll tickets are issued by size. They frequently charge a class A (us) the same toll as a heavy tractor trailer. If you spot a discrepancy a refund can be only obtained by mail. Ask the toll taker for a form, fill it out and submit with a copy of your registration. PA and NJ turnpikes do this all the time.

The gate is used as a speed control device. It opens when a vehicle is detected. If the system does not detect a valid E-Pass/LeeWay/SunPass a picture of the license plate is taken.

You will eventually get a bill or citation. I know this because the batteries in my SunPass went dead, the SunPass did not trigger the light that indicates toll paid nor did the SunPass give an aural indication that the toll was paid. The gate still went up, and about a month later, I got a notice from FDOT. They just deducted the toll from my SunPass account. I changed the batteries and all is well.

Quite a discussion. I expected (hoped) replies that said "just buy the "RV pass" and your good in all 48" Anyway I bought a SunPass for starters. Sounds like if one traveled alot crosscountry I'd need a designated drawer and an inventory sheet! Thanks again for sharing. You folks are a great help for this newbee.

having just drove from Sioux Falls, SD to Allentown, PA my EZ-Pass worked in IL, IN, OH and PA. Visited the kids and grandkids in NJ over the weekend and it worked in NJ too (BTW - I originally obtained my EZPass in NJ). In the past, my EZPass worked on the Delaware Memorial Bridge and in MD.

I also have TX-Tag for the times I am on a TX toll road.

Yes, Florida sends both the bill and/or the citation to out of state vehicle owners.
Texas claims they can't send the bills to out of state vehicles. Maybe they need to contact Florida to show them how.
