Towing a 02 jeep wrangler w/ manual transmission
Is there anything special that you need to do to tow an 02 Jeep Wrangler? I want to tow with wheels on the ground. I towed an explorer before and used a drive line disconnect. But I've heard you do not need that on the wrangler. True?
it is a 4x4
we are relatively new to Rving and towing

Transfer case in 'Neutral' and the trans in 'Park' and the ignition key to the first indention. Now, the choices for the Jeep's base plate, tow bar, wiring harness, safety cables, break away switch and auxiliary braking system, that's another story. Many, many choices...
We use BlueOx base plate, Aladdin tow bar and SMI Stay N Play Duo aux. braking system. It's a great system and works well for us, but someone with your year of Jeep should be along with some better info that will suit your needs. Welcome to the forum. 
edit: oops, I just reminded myself that you trans is manual...I think I've read that you put it reverse or 1st. Someone will correct me if that's wrong. : )

Assuming the Wrangler is a 4x4, then post #2 is correct. If it's a 2WD, I don't think it can be towed, even in neutral, without a drive line disconnect.

Look in your OWNERS MANUAL under Recreational Towing, it explains it in detail.

Quite possible that they no longer have it for a 12+ year old car. Especially if it was purchased used. And as far as I can tell, the oldest available at jeep.com is 2004.

Yikes, forgot about that...when I think 'Jeep', it's always in 4WD.

For a 4x4 with manual transmission, transfer case in neutral and transmission in 4th or 5th gear. We hook up to the rv. Put the transfer case into neutral than into reverse to test that we are really in neutral. Then put the jeep in 4th for traveling.

We have towed our '02 for just short of 100k miles. As stated above, the transfer case is placed in neutral, and the transmission in 4th or 5th gear. After placing the transfer case in neutral always verify being disconnected by letting the clutch out. To that I will add, turn your ignition to the off position then immediately return it to the first steering unlock position. This should be the first "click" as you move the ignition switch toward start. The steering column will be unlocked but there should be no power to the dash instruments.

Excellent advice. That is how I have towed my 03 Wrangler for 4 years now. No issues.

when towing the Jeep do you need an electrical charge for the battery. I have a 2004 Wrangler 4 WD automatic just got it
