Transmission???
I have tried to look it up, but can not find info I am looking for. Does anyone know what kind of transmission I have in my 1997 Winnebago Brave? The transmission fluid feels dirty to the touch, and so I am trying to find out what kind of fluid and how much to use. If anyone could help me that would be great.

What engine do you have? Give us some more information on the MH and will help point us in the right direction.

OP, do a Google search as follows: specs for 1997 Winnebago motor home, and go to the Winnebago site, select the year/model and se where it goes from there.

When you say the trans fluid "feels dirty" I am assuming when you pull the dipstick and wipe it off that there is some "grit" on it. If this is the case, it is likely just some rust particles on the dipstick tube that comes off on the dipstick itself when you pull it out. Very common on vehicles like motorhomes that are not used much.
That said, it would be wise to change the trans fluid anyway. Any fluid that is Dexron III compatible will work.

Agree to change it as that is cheap way to ensure it has good fluid. Dropping the pan and changing the filter at same time, not all fluid will be removed, but this will get some out; maybe 5-6 quarts depending on pan capacity. Drive for another engine oil change or two and then do the trans again.
Your trans is most likely the 4L80E, which is a 4 speed overdrive. It is basically the old Turbo 400 with added OD, and electronic valve body. I believe it should use Mercon fluid, not Dex III which is an older spec. Mercon is backward compatible with Dex III.

Since the op did not know then maybe they are not diy capable of proper at servicing.
If gritty feeling could be okay or could be real bad.
Smell and color can tell a tale to folks who do this for a living.
Not sure if converter can be drained or not or if it can be flushed...long time since my gas station days...
Best option from a non-pro is to locate a qualified service shop that could look it over and comment on fluid condition then also do proper full service including converter drain or flush to get it cleaned out then check band adjustment if required.
There may be others here who service your specific tranny who coukd give yiu specific advice regarding service processes and interval.

I think the 1997 Chevy P32 chassis used the GM 4L80E transmission. At any rate, it is a GM 4 speed automatic and will require GM-spec ATF to change the fluid..

If you deal with a proper GM garage, they will steer you to the latest upgrade Dexron V1. There is no certification standard now for Dex 111-it is only on the reputation of the manufacturer so they don't have to meet any standard.
