Transportation options with a rental?

I've been lurking these forums for a while because my wife and I are considering buying an RV... someday. In the meantime, we're thinking a family vacation with a rented RV could be a good way to test the waters. This has raised a few specific questions. Any input is much appreciated!

Our current pulling vehicle (2006 Dodge Grand Caravan) has a very limited towing capacity so I believe we'd be limited to renting a MH. So, how practical is it to vacation without a toad? We usually stay at a hotel and then drive to local attractions (beach one day, hiking another day, etc.). Is it a major ordeal to have to pack up the MH every time we want to go somewhere? Are there alternatives that you veterans would recommend?

Thank you,
TLA

Using a full size RV as your commuter transportation (day trips etc) my prove to be very challenging in that its size will prevent you from finding a suitable parking space. If you don't plan on driving a great distance, consider bicycles or, better yet, rent a car.

If you rent a relatively small Class C or B then using it as transportation may not be too difficult.

Another option could be renting a tow dolly for behind the MH from something like uhaul if your vehicle is front wheel drive.

We rented a class C from Cruise America twice to tour Yellowstone and the Tetons with our kids. I think it was a 24 or 28 footer. Had no trouble parking at attractions. Of course it was 10 and 22 years ago... We changed locations just about every day.

It would be good practice for breaking down camp, leveling, hooking up utilities, and setting up camp.

We spent 2 6 week vacations in our Class C before we bought a tow vehicle. It was not bad getting it around to various sites and attractions. Parking usually was not bad in the towns and occasionally asked a business if we could park in there large lot.
We have seen may "rent America" motor homes on our travels with out a second vehicle. It is a bit of a pain but not a big deal.

Friends just did a trip renting from cruise america. Two week trip, with one week spent in Salt Lake City area. There, they rented an Enterprise car to get around, since they were situated in one area for several days.

Sincere thanks for all your input. Sounds like going toadless is doable but I'll continue to research alternatives.
