Travel on Interstates or Not?
When traveling cross country do you try to primarily travel on Interstate highways, or not? I know in most of the western states the choice is often dictated by your destination, but when you have an option and all else is roughly equal which do you prefer, Interstates, other major highways, or secondary highways?
Personally I prefer major federal highways, with paved full width shoulders, and preferably 4 lanes, but 2 lanes will do.

Interstate Highways when necessary , but prefer secondary.
But basically if it's paved and going the right direction , I'm on it.

The only time we traveled interstates was if there was no other way to get to our secondary highway to continue onward.

Same as 'twogypsies'........
Secondary/back roads.
Interstates ONLY when no other route available
As FTrs we weren't on a schedule so time/distance had no relevance

I tend to seek out the second class roads where the ride isn't as smooth as it might be - so it is the interstates for us.

Although we enjoy the journey, we always seem to have a destination and a reservation to make so it's usually Interstates for us. I also like knowing that our 13'6" rig is going to get through the overpasses unscathed and I can find fuel when I need it.
Happy trails,

Interstates as much as possible. And here is why:
Stoplights. I hate stoplights that are spaced every mile and not timed to allow traffic to flow at the posted speed limit. Throw traffic into the mix and you can spend hours playing stop and go.
Interstate travel is not possible in some areas of the country and that is fine.
There are also scenic drives in every state that are also okay.

Both of us are still working full time so when we're out we usually have a schedule and are time limited. As such the fastest most direct route is a necessary which usually dictates an interstate. When possible I will reroute on to the secondary highways. Usually the road is in better shape and the scenery and sights are much better and worth the extra time.

Just depends if I been in the area before, I'm retired truck driver and believe in the 2 lane road to see America, not the interstate
Got too slow the pace down, check out the farmer working in the fields, the old town square, how it was before WalMart and bypass around town was built etc etc

Both. Like secondary state roads better. Interstate when there is not a better choice.

Interstates for us. I find them safer and more convenient.

Same here. We get to a destination and then go look around. Yo haven't lived until you have been on secondary roads and the hit the "detour" sign. You can wind up no telling where and be on roads you don't want to be on with a motorhome.
