I have some hidden "mad money" for that purpose; there are too many places that won't take travelers' checks for that to be reliable. It's also useful if someplace wants to charge an outrageous fee to use a card (they lose my business after that) or they just don't accept plastic at all.

Most grocery stores and many other stores also give cash back with varying limits, such as $20 or $40. I haven't used an ATM in years.

I do use mt credit card....
I haven't had a debit card since i was in my 20's and did white powder up my nose, that was a bad thing all around....

Have 350 pictures of my favorite dead president in my desk drawer. They are worth more than the facebook stock i bought last week. Will never be worth less than face value. Can take anywhere (except miami) without any problems at all...

I have stayed at campgrounds that only take
cash or a check. and not a credit cards.
So I carry my check book, one credit card. I take,
but use my debit card only in ATM's while traveling.
