Trip routing Need assistance

We are planning a trip down the East Coadt to Dover, Delaware in May and although we have traveled there before we would like to avoid the New York city area. Our GPS wants to send us over the George Washington Bridge with all the associated traffic. I'm looking for a better Route to avoid all of this. Any help from you seasoned veterans would be a help. THANKS

What's your starting point?

I am assuming you are coming down thru Maine and Mass.? If so either take the Mass pike to the NYS Thruway south to Jersey Turnpike to Delaware Memorial Bridge then watch for exit!!! If you want to go further south take Mass pike then I-84 to NYS Thruway south at Newburgh to NJ Turnpike. After Dover go south to Cherrystone Campground great place then you can continue south over and under the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel stop at the observation area on the south end!!! Have a safe trip!!

You can take I-84 to the NY Thruway South and then I-287 which will hook you back up with the NJ Turnpike and take you to the bridge over into Delaware.

That will keep you away from NYC.
