Last September we traveled from Indiana to Montana via US 2, not a great route if you get bored seeing lots and lots of wide open spaces, but traffic is light and the divided highway is in good condition. You are visiting SD so that route is out. If you plan to use interstate highways and will be near Davenport, IA the Scott county Campground(ph 563-328-3281)
is a surprisingly good place. It is just off the interstate(1 mi) on the West side of the city; $15 for full hookups. Across the street a large RV dealership is convenient. At Glacier NP we stayed at the KOA at ST. Mary's, MT. This at the entrance to Going to the Sun Highway, and is a good base camp for day trips, one of which is Waterton Park(passport required as of 1/1/06) in Canada. If you carry a firearm, the KOA owner will secure it in his safe until you return if you wish. Wish I could remember more, but silly me I said "what me keep a journal? Yea right, it's said the memory is the first to go and I forget what is second. You have a great trip planned, take your time and enjoy everything! After Labor Day is less crowded of course, but many folks have the same idea nowadays. While near Mt. Rushmore pick a CG convenient to visit all the SW corner of SD. Hot Springs, SD has the mammoth site and the drive through Custer Park to get there is in itself a real enjoyment. Then there is Deadwood, Lead, and the list continues. Badlands NP is right along the way to Mt. Rushmore too. We don't have children home anymore so we stayed at the motel/CG in Keystone, SD. Got up each morning to the view of Mt.Rushmore and again illuminated each night.
BTW, we had a 92 Dutchmen Royal 30' 5er until last April, traded it for a new 05 Grand Junction by Dutchmen. I like thier products.

We went out there from New York last summer. The details are in my trip log at the link in my signature. Highly recommend Mountain Meadow campground near Glacier, Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone and Colter Bay in Grand Tetons.

One thing for sure is do not miss seeing Jewel Cave which is approx 16 miles from Mt Rushmore. It is the third largest explored cave in the U.S. or World....127 miles of it...very interesting and colorful...take a jackt it is a constant 50 or so degrees.
