Troubleshooting general discussion.

There have been thousands of good threads with troubles and this place is great for finding solutions.

Many folks would benefit from some general advice so the function of this thread is general tips and not specific to any thing in general.

The learners need to contribute here too as feedback helps everyone.

I will start and many will add.

PLEASE GENERAL STUFF ONLY as specific things need their own thread.

Here we go...

Know what should be there BEFORE looking.

Example is someone states battery is dead and they check the voltage but do not know it should be 12 volts.

If you know 12 volts (general statement) is the expected reading and you observe 10 you know you have an issue.

Locate the manual and read it if you can.

Please gather as much information as you can and include it in your post.

If you have no clue that is great as everyone has been there...just indicate so when you post then be sure to follow instructions given.

To those of us who try to help we need to be sure to keep the instructions within the ability of the folks needing our help.

To those needing help please ASK FIRST and if you do not understand the task ASK FOR DETAIL as we may assume you understand.

The goal is for the person in trouble to safely troubleshoot and maybe fix their issue and for others to learn.

Most important, provide all the Nameplate Information. Such as, Make Model, Year and any other info that will give the forum a clear description of what equipment you have.
One sure way is to go into your signature and put in a description of all your goodies. Then, you don't have to re type the same thing over and over.

Valves on propane tanks (and all gas tanks) are designed to be backseated. That is, there is a seal against the outside world when closed and a seal against the valve stem seal when opened. Normally with valves, especially those that carry hot water or steam, you open a valve and then beck it off the backseat to prevent binding.

Tony - Is this what you mean?

To those needing help, and as mentioned previously, give as much detail as available as to make, model, year and so on.

To those offering help, read the original post. Many times there are details in that post that seem to get missed by those replying.

And one other thing. When the problem first appears, try to stop, get out of the way, and just think about it for awhile. What was the last thing that happened before the problem appeared? Could that have caused the problem?

Most of the time, in my experience, the problem is not as serious as first thought, and with a little thought, you can figure it out and solve it.

People usually want to learn when they ask questions and they usually don't know much about their problem as that may be the first time they have ever encountered such a thing.
