Unattended Pets?

Kind of a rookie question. Please be gentle.

One of the big reasons we always wanted an RV was so we could explore America and take our pets with us. Hooked up to 50 watts in a campground with the A/C going, they're pretty safe. But now that we've actually taken the plunge and have a RV, I keep seeing all these campgrounds with "NO UNATTENDED PETS" as their policy. Kinda tough to go see America with your pooch on a leash. Not many restaurants will have you.

Is this usual? Does everyone take their dog along with them to the local Walmart? Or am I just hitting a rash of weird campgrounds?

I know I could just leave them in the RV, but my dogs are like everyone else's. They're generally quiet, but occasionally they do indeed bark. I don't want to come back and find my rig towed off to the impound lot with Fido inside.

What does everyone else do?

We take our 80lb English Golden Retriever with us . . . everywhere . . .in his younger days, he would bark if he heard a car door slam . . . . we went to PetSmart and got one of those barking collars . . . . used it for about three trips . . . . he doesn't bark anymore . . . .

It's a fairly common prohibition and as you have guessed, it's to give the campground a way to boot you out if you dog barks & someone complains.

Here is now we handle it.

We have 2 ten pound brothers who do play and sometimes bark. Our procedure anytime we leave them, whether a few minutes or a few hours is this:

1. They almost always are put in the bedroom with the A/C and the TV on.
2. When I take them out for a last pee and come inside and open the treat box, they beat me into the bedroom & up on the bed.
3. They get their treats & I turn off the light and close the door. The night shades are pulled.

If they bark when inside the coach, it's almost always in response to a noise outside. With the air & TV on they don't hear any noise that they react to.

They are now so imprinted with this routine that it's no big deal.

Most people leave their dogs, and some really do bark up a storm. We leave our Springers in the coach for 3~4 hours tops, but in preparation they get a big walk & lots of play so that they sleep most of the time. I also have 2 cameras set up so that I can look in on them from my iPhone.

The camera idea is smart...combined with a temperature gauge so you know it is not to hot inside. Our dog gets in her kennel and is quite all day--common among her breed.

I think CG are talking about Unattended Pets as chained outside or in a cage outside. If they are inside and taken care of I do not think they have a thing to say about your pets.
