In addition to passports for each grand child, we need a notarized letter from each parent saying it is okay for our grand children to travel with us outside the USA. Is there a standard wording for this letter? I'm looking for wording that is recognized by the USA and Canadian governments.

thanks,

The letter should probably contain the parents' name and address, state that they have full knowledge of your travel plans, etc. You could call the Canadian consulate to find out what that country requires. Also, you will need a notarized authorization for you to obtain medical care for each child should that unfortunate occasion arise.

I found several web sites that have boiler plate letters. Some are fee and others are free. Do a Google search with the words "international travel letter for minor children". The choices will be presented.

We've traveled, with the grand kids, for years inside the USA. I have all the other documents.

We dont have grandchildren yet, but bring our niece and nephew with us on occasion and we just have a standard letter written from the parents with copies of birthcertificats and insurance cards in case of emergency.

Not too sure about out of the country, so I too will check out those sites mentioned.

Thanks
Pat

I have a curent health care proxy for my grand children when we travel. this document should be all that is required of any official that you have consent to transport the children across boarders, etc.

Hi Ron,
Why do you say that a health care proxy is all that is needed to cross an international border? We have the same health care documents. Health care has nothing to do with immigration. I forget the exact dates, but passports will be required for USA citizens to renter the USA from Canada, by land. To limit the illegal movement of children, passports and a notarized letter from both parents authorizing their movement is needed. The problem is not leaving the USA, it is getting back into the USA. I would never try to cross an international border without each minor child having a passport and the parental authorization letter. Even established organizations like the Boy Scouts, etc. required the letter when crossing the border with a group of minor children.

Here are some helpful links. We took two grandchildren into Canada last summer. Each parent drafted a letter of authorization for travel containing a medical consent statement. Their signatures must be notorized. It is all here. Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Patrol travel requirements .
Above all else- do not joke or be hesitant about answering questions from border agents!

We routinely take a couple of Grandchildren to Canada with us. We have a letter from parent giving us permission to travel with them and also their health insurance cards. Last summer the crossing guard was more concerned with the papers for our cat.

Gary, Hi I used the Health Care Proxy as consent from a parent a few times and had no other questions. I realize that times and Officers do change but I don't believe Passports are available or required for Minor children???

As of Sept. 30 2007 passports were required for all US citizens including children. The US homeland security has made this requirement.
To be safe if you don't believe you need one for your grandkids ask before you cross the border.
You don't want to sit in a holding cell at the border if the Custom Official has a problem with your documents. We had no paper work, good thing parents were in car behind us. That was in 2005 coming back from Canada at Niagra Falls
Remember it is better to be safe then sorry.
Passports for children are for 5 years.
We have gotting passports for our Grandkids for years when they became old enough to travel with us, 4-5 years old.

Thanks to all who have posted. For me, traveling with grand children (minor child that I am not the parent) means they will have a passport, parental letter of authorization for international movement of a minor child and health care authorization signed by each parent and notarized for each child traveling with me.

As a special note to divorced or seperated parents. Both parents must agree and sign an international movement of a minor child letter. The letters should be notarized. This is true even if the parent having legal custody is traveling with the child.

Someone gave you bad information. Read the U.S. Dept. of State requirements, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol requirements, Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative

Not bad information, just a change in the time frame. As stated on the U.S. Department of State ALL PERSONS will be required to have passports by the summer of 2008. This is the 2nd or 3rd time the date has been changed.
My information came from the U.S. Passport site,
again one Gov. agency not talking to the other.
Bottom line it is a lot less hassle with a passport.
