Valve stem extensions

Can valve stem extensions be used with rubber valve stems or is it mandatory to have metal stems?

It is not advisable to use valve stem extenders on rubber valve stems. They cause too much stress on the rubber seats inside the wheels. You would be better off buying metal stems with air pressure / tires temperature readings.

Thanks Matt! That's what I was afraid of!

I'm asking for my neighbor who lost her husband a few months ago. She has a 2015 Itasca Navion 24J motorhome. I checked her tire pressures yesterday and it was a real pain to get to the valve stems on the inside rear tires. It looks like a set of the short 45 degree extenders will do the job but don't want to do anything to cause her problems down the road!

Joe,

I won't use valve extenders and don't! Just another place for an accident waiting to happen.

I would highly suggest that you install one piece Borg Valve Stems that will face in the correct direction for each wheel.

This makes it VERY easy to adjust air pressures and install your TPMS sensors.

I have the braided type that have an L brackets on the inflate end and are working fine. One the previous coach had the same, were old and had to replace them as they were Waring out when I replaced tires. If she has $200 to spend the brass are the way to go if not a $20 Bill and a kind gentleman will do.

I use braided extensions on rubber valve stems.

Like OLYLEN, I have L brackets for the fill end.

Replaced them due to age while doing the brakes. Never leaked and still don't.

Nobody wants extensions but pressure monitors are just about the same thing. They push open the valve core and seal to the rubber valve the same way.

There is no way my hand can go between the tires to even hold the stem when trying to fill. So I went with all extensions, to the L bracket that's being talked about, and have not had any problems, but mine are all steel.

Can adding valve stem extenders affect the balance of the tires?

Each to their own ways, but....

I have added good truck shop flexible valve extensions of proper length on each of my 4 MHs when I bought them. They do not get in the way of the tires or rims, and have never come loose from the valve stems.
They never leaked.
I dont recall the maker and they are not labeled. But they were not cheap, neigborhood of $50+ per pair. Top shelf stuff at a truck shop that truckers there reccomended.
The braiding is tight on the hose, and there is a neoprene gasket where it screws on to the valve stem. When tightened, you gotta work to get them loose! The braiding touches nothing if they are the proper length and set in place carefully.
I double check them after new tires are mounted.
They don't mess with tire balance.

Thanks Dave! I'm trying to find some with mounting brackets that will work on her wheels. All of the snap-in brackets I find would be much too long for the openings in the wheels.

The kits came with the brackets. Easy to mount with a drill and pop rivets. My rims all had brackets.
Best wishes!
