Very lucky today
Heading along I-10 west of San Antonio TX today, less than 25 miles to go to the campground. Saw a shadow on the road up ahead, thought it was a patch in the blacktop. Then realized it was a complete tread off a big truck tire. I had no where to go, there was a truck passing me on one side and a narrow shoulder covered in trash on the other side. I just clipped the "alligator" with the right front wheel. Loud noises, including some from the passenger seat. Pulled over and found the electric step wouldn't open all the way. The frame is considerably bent. There are also black streaks all down the side, some as high as 5 feet up. Fortunately it did not hit the one week old CR-V on the towbar.
I'm taking it in to a dealer tomorrow to get the step looked at, and figure out if it is repairable or will have to be replaced. Also, does anyone know what would be the best method of removing black rubber streaks from the paintwork?

Glad you were not hurt! Does insurance cover this kind of issue?

I think it probably would. However, a new step will cost about $450 plus labor and I have a $1,000 deductible, so it would be a moot point anyway.

Try a "Bounce" dryer sheet. Wet the area of the rubber skid marks and then rub with the dryer sheet. You have nothing to loose by trying that and you can thank me later.
I hate those road alligators.

The cleaner Awesome at the dollar store or Walmart cleans anything and everything and is very inexpensive.

Be aware that the concentrate says not to spray it full strength on glass. Makes me wonder what else it'll take off!

Glad everyone is safe. Same thing happened me DH and me a few years back. Try Magic Eraser on the black marks.

Some auto waxes have mild abrasive and are sold as wax/cleaner. Clay bar comes to mind as well. Good luck with both. Steps as well as black marks. If you were a Nascar fan it would be easy. Apply a large number on the side, and leave the rubber marks. Sorry, bad humor. Glad no one was hurt and only minor damage. Good luck

I'd be tempted to try mineral spirits or turpentine/paint thinner. Maybe treat the black marks the same as you would tar or something along those lines. Should come of with little grief...

You might also try WD-40. Glad no one was hurt. Could have been much worse.

I've used Rubbing Compound in the past to get various marks, tar, etc. off of my vehicles. Just be careful using it around the decals.

I have found that Windex is quite the cleaner. Don't know what it will do on the black marks but I would try it.

My advice would be to try soapy water first. Next call would be to a body shop for their recommendations. Then get more aggressive if you need to.
