For those of you with an RV in Virginia, how can you afford to pay the personal taxes on them? We intend to relocate to the Richmond area for work reasons & have discovered that it will cost $3.57 per $100 of value each year in taxes. Ouch as we have an Itasca Horizon (worth $150k +/-) what can we do? Leave it registered in NY?

Do they assess the tax value the same as the retail value and are there any caps or tiers on the taxes? Maybe they assess on wholesale or Blue Book value?

If no caps and if assessed @ full retail, someone with a $500,000 motorhome would be paying $17,850 per year for personal property taxes, pretty steep IMHO.

Not that it has any bearing on VA but here in NC the DMV determines a tax value using their own systems which I always thought was tied to a wholesale or loan value type price. My rig has always been assessed much lower than I'd be willing to sell it and at $0.57 per hundred dollars it isn't too bad.

But $3.57 per hundred is a killer, would motivate me to move.

I am fortunate to live in one of VA's rare counties that doesn't tax RV's or boats, other than an annual $24 windshield sticker tax. I do pay the tax on my cars and deduct the amount on my Federal income tax each year. So its a wash.

It is a really dumb tax, but aren't they all?

Best Regards!

Old Snipe;

Thanks for the info. We wanted to stay in the RV for the 6 months that I will be attending the State Police Academy & we could not find any places to stay in Prince William County.

My wife could more easily find a research job in the northern part of the state, but where to stay? We wanted to use the RV to save a little $$ since I will be taking a pay cut to go to VSP & she will need time to find a job.

If it's only for six months, maintain residency somewhere else and just be a visitor to VA. Don't title/register your vehicles there or otherwise make it your residence (if you can avoid it, that is).

RV Roamer;

The problem is once my training is over, I will be a Virginia State Trooper & will reside somewhere in the state. At a base pay of $40k, I don't see how I would budget $3.57/100 on an RV worth $150k ($5,355.00 per year)

Given the fact that you will not know your VSP assignment until graduation, I would try and make arrangements to hang on to the coach until such time you could "then" determine the City/County you will reside in and the tax responsibility in said municipality.
As several posters have indicated,it is unfortunate that there are differing rates of assessment in the same Commonwealth.
With the VSP's residency requirement,this could prove to be quite a hardship.

Best of luck to you, you are entering a fine organization.

Do they have to pay the tax if they just reside in a Campground? I thought Mass was the tax state.

Roger, not sure about while he's in school but when he accepts the graduation certificate he will have to be a Virginia resident.

Foz,

You might want to put an ad for it in our 'free' classifieds.
