Walmart in the morning

Stopped at Walmart in Seaford on the way to Punkin Chunkin in Bridgeville Del. Camping 'corn field' opens at 9:00 and we wanted to get in line early. I live about 4 hours away so we drove to Walmart the night before to get in line early to get a good camping spot.

Turns out this was totally unnecessary. The corn field was almost a half mile wide and over mile long. We had our pick of 'sites'. Things didn't really start to fill up until after noon thursday. Next year we will just time it to get to the corn field about 10 or 11 am.

chunkin

The word you've entered isn't in the dictionary.

chunk

1chunk noun \ˈchəŋk\

1: a short thick piece or lump (as of wood or coal)

2: a large noteworthy quantity or part <bet a sizable chunk of money on the race>

I'll see your link and up you 5.

Punkin Chunkin doesn't need to be in any dictionary as it's the way they talk in lower slower Delaware. Things are so different from northern Delaware, in lower Delaware (below the canal) it could be a different state. Or country!

Ya gotta be here to understand.

BTW, a rule prohibiting explosives to chunk punkins is credited with preventing serious injuries and perhaps the loss of life.

It must be the water or weather in those "states".

Is a "Potato Gun" considered to have an explosive? How about compressed air?

The compressed air cannons hold the records....almost a mile.

There are centrifugal, catapults, trebuchets and human powered machines.

Some are amazing, some self destruct.

You are right. That's all they leave when the punkins land. They travel so high and so far, once they land the only thing to see is a little dust cloud. Attend 'Punkin Chunkin' once, all will become clear. It was the most friendly, craziest group of people I have had the pleasure of being a part of.

Here is a small example of they type folks running this event.
There was a Flag presentation ceremony and the National Anthem played every morning. The announcer would ask all the men to remove our hats. Then the announcer would add, . . . "and if you don't take your cover (hat) off, I'm sure there are several 'red-necks' standing near you that will be glad to help you!" Even some of the ladies removed their hats.

Took this picture from the top of the RV Friday night. This field is over a half mile wide and over a mile long. The tree line in the distance is over a mile away and the campers are packed this tight all the way to the trees. There was an estimated 30K people at Punkin Chunkin on Saturday. We heard about the crowds and that is why we overnighted at Walmart to be there early.

They grow funny lookin' punkins that ain't orange and the punkin patches are secret as many teams are cross breeding punkins to withstand the pressure of gettin' shot out of a cannon.

Those punkins that come out of the barrel in pieces are called pie.
