Water off when rv empty
OK, somewhere I read about some who turn the water off when leaving the RV empty for a day. Sounds like a good idea to prevent water disasters. Upon further thinking though I see some difficulties and concerns.
Turning cg water on and off every time is a pain. What about sleep time? Should it not be off as well then?
The only fairly easy way to do this if one is concerned about water damage that I can think of is to fill the fresh water tank at the cg and use the pump which is easily switched on and off. The tank can then be filled by switching the water from the cg to tank fill if your RV is so equipped. This would allow night time use of water if needed.
This means that those of us that add a bit of bleach to our tank each fill will be doing a lot of that.
Hmmmmm, seems like a lot of effort for an unlikely event, but if we ever have such I will wish I had done it. Thoughts?

We typically use the water pump, as it seems to give us better pressure than most parks we've visited... It also reminds me when to dump the gray/black tanks too.. So, I don't feel it's too much trouble..
Also.. as for adding bleach.. I sanitize my tanks at the beginning, and MAYBE in the middle of each season.. if water is going into my tank, it goes thru a filter first.. So, I don't worry too much about the quality..
Finally.. it may seem like a hassle.. but it won't if you come home to a flooded RV..
Just sayin' !!!

There are lots of "extra precautions" that may someday save you some headache and dollars but most of them are for people that worry constantly instead of relaxing and enjoying life. Do what makes you comfortable, there is not a right or wrong answer.

A simple shut-off valve on the hose where it connects to the unit would be a simple fix if you truly want to shut the water off inside the unit. If the hose blows, it should be all outside.

Adding bleach each time is an individual's choice. Leaving the water on is an individual's choice. Taking precautions is an everyday occurrence for everyone so just carry on with whatever you're comfortable with.

When at a CG for an extended time, we leave the water turned on. If we go away for the day, we just turn it off at the park faucet. When we get back, we turn it back on.
Never been an inconvenience. If we forget to do it, we do. You can only prevent so much. We also have a double hose adapter that we hook up to the CG water faucet. When we want to use an outside hose, we hook to that. Easy enough to turn off.

I woke up one morning in my house and found all the windows wet inside. Checked the basement and water was squirting out of pinhole leaks in the old copper pipe coming from the hot water heater. Now when we leave the house for more than just the day, I turn off the well pump at the panel in the basement. It is a pain, sure, but not as much pain as getting 50 or more gallons of water out of the basement with a shop vac.
So if we are gone from the RV overnight, we turn off the water at the CG spigot or turn off the water pump if using it.

If I'm hooked up to city water, I leave it on, unless I'm going to be gone for more than a day or two.
If I'm on internal water, we usually turn the pump off anytime we're away from the MH..

Add us to the list of folks who use the tank and pump. We stopped using the city water hookup after a stuck toilet valve flooded out old MH.

We do both. While on city water, try to remember to kill the water anytime we are away from the RV for the day. At times even with CG water we use onboard water and turn the pump off when gone. HAVE seen several flooded RV's

Add us too, but in my case it was from seeing a boat that had sunk in a marina when an internal water line broke and caused flooding inside the boat when the owner had left for a couple of weeks, and left the marina water on.
That convinced me that I don't ever want to leave the water hose on.
That has carried over into my RV habits, so I always use the water from the tank.
I know that if something goes wrong there is in finite amount of water that can come inside where it doesn't belong.
And I also know that the water in the tank is always fresh due to being used and refilled.

We usually leave our water turned on. That being said, earlier this year we were sitting outside and heard a pop noise from the RV next door and then soon observed water dripping from the bottom of the camper. The people next door were gone so I turned their water off. We later discovered a water line under the kitchen sink came off at a elbow. The little water under the sink was easily cleaned up, otherwise the camper would have flooded. We thought after that incident we would start shutting off our water, but that didn't last long.

We try to remember to turn the water off at the CG spigot when we leave for the day. I had a fitting pop off connecting to the tub/shower faucet. Fortunately we were there and got it stopped quickly, but that taught me a lesson! Not a big deal and better safe than sorry!

We were staying NE of Tampa off 41 and returned to the CG to find our neighbor's wet bay gushing water and had flooded the area between us I turned the water off and it was still a few hours before they returned. It CAN happen, especially with high water pressure is some locations.
Had our outside wet bay faucet blow off while at Port St Joe - very high water pressure on Cape San Blas
