Lots of good weather apps, but for road conditions/traffic you should look to the State dept. of highways, like this site:
Road Conditions
Each state has their own website that gives up to date highway conditions info. Especially in snow/ice regions, they have best data, cams, etc.

We use the weather channel and Waze on our phones. We also carry a hand held CB that has emergency weather info., and switch between CH 19 & 13 on the CB channels. Reception distance isn't too great for the CB, but does come in handy when we run into traffic jams.

You will happy to know that worst stretch of road on highway 40 at Newberry Springs, just east of Barstow, has been resurfaced this past week and is smooth as silk.
That was about 10 miles of the worse road I have driven on in the entire country with the exception of I10 near New Orleans.
BFlinn181's link is good and just about any weather site will be fairly accurate.

I will give you a URL I like NWS - Doppler Radar National Mosaic
I find it very interesting,, But when it comes to apps, on my 'droid I have (in)Accuweather (i add the IN because.. well, it fits).
I also have NOAA apps. NOAA weather Free and Radar Express.
On the computer browser I have Firefox, with the Forecast Fox add-on.. This uses Accuweather and you can program in any number of cities and either pick one, or slide show them. Kind of neat.
The phone lets me do that on the Accuweather widget too.

Rollingzoo,
Keep in mind that part of CA is getting major rain storms right now.

Thank you all, this will be our longest trip since starting fulltiming. I agree with arch Hoagland. Louisiana has the worst roads that I have ever driven on.

The I40 and Hwy 99 do not connect. We always go Hwy 58 and at Bakersfield catch the 99 or go over to the I5 depending on our Sacto destination.

You asked about which "App", so I assume you have an iPhone... That said, eWeather HD; hands down the best weather App you can use!! I would add to that "RadarScope" and you're covered!!

I personally like an App of Ch13 in Houston TX, It locks onto your GPS position anywhere that you are at and give weather alerts at your current location. I have used it all over the US so far. ABC13 Houston Apps for Tablet, iPad, iPhone & Android Devices | abc13.com
