Went RV shopping today..... Wow

I went to a Camping World that's a hour or so away from home today. I had to go a few doors down the street for work and thought I would stop by. They had a RV that I saw just a few days ago that was just above my budget but I wanted to check it out anyways. It was a Fleetwood American Tradidtion.... It has over 150k miles but looked OK from the pics. Upon inspection I realized why it was cheap... The ceiling was still actually went plus water stains all over the coach....

They had a few more tag axe Rav's that I walked through and every one was beat up pretty bad. They were all in the 2004-2008 age with the last one I couldn't believe they even purchased the thing. I think it was a intrigue? Anyways, I opened the door... Took a step in a heard a sloshing noise... The mat they had on the first step was soaked with water. I then about fell over was the smell of mold... (I am very allergic to that stuff)... So I covered my mouth and walked into the coach. It was nice but water stains everywhere... What totally surprised me was the slide behind the drivers seat had probably a dozen 4-6in diameter mushrooms/mold things growing on the carpet. they looked like something people grow in their reef aquarium...

Welcome to shopping for a used motor home. In our experience, that's pretty common.

CW is not known for high quality. They are just your basics. There are a lot of other quality dealers out there that have nice rigs. Keep looking!

Good luck & Happy Trails!!

Don't let the junk that Camping World has on their lots scare you away, there are many others out there along with private parties that will have very nice equipment.

I should of known I guess.... every RV I looked at that was used was dirty inside. On one coach the crapper had thousands of dead bugs and stains in the toilet.

I hope to find one from a private owner.... I did talk with another dealership 2 weeks ago, they told me they buy at auction in Florida however they state they are very picky on what they get.

Wow, the condition of those coaches you describe is shocking, even for CW - which I know doesn't have a great reputation. But still - damn...

Maybe I'm just spoiled by the market here in southern California, but I didn't encounter anything even half that bad while I was shopping last year. Sorry you had such a rotten (literally) exposure to used coaches, but as others have said there are plenty of good ones to be found - both at dealers and at private parties. Good luck with your continuing search!

When we "kicked tires" at CW in Raleigh few years back, we were appalled at the poor quality of the used coaches we saw offered at high prices. We bought our first one, a Class C, used from an individual. When I started looking at Class A, I saw one online that looked interesting at a different CW. When I called to inquire, the salesman was honest and said, "ma'am, you do not want that coach. It is in very bad condition". (Sad to say, I learned he is no longer there...) We bought our Class A used from Independence RV in FL. It was, and is, a great coach. They sold it new and took it as a trade when the first owner moved up to a DP. So not all dealerships are equal by any means!

We spent a lot of time looking on line and at a few dealers. We found a dealer who specializes in quality used rv's. He sells just a few brand new class A but the rest of his lot is all used TT, MH, Class A & C. Tons of coaches to look at. We had a few we liked from the website. Ended up with our current coach! Funny thing.. one coach we looked at was used for dog shows! the sofas had been removed! So the owners didn't think to put the sofas back before trying to sell???

Unfortunately I don't think we'll ever be rid of Camp World.

I got my rig from a dealer in South Carolina who only sold used coaches. DP, gassers, fifth wheels and other towables. Every coach on the lot, and there were a lot back in 2011, was clean and presentable. My coach was a repo for Florida they acquired at auction. They left me alone with the coach for several hours during which I checked everything. Price negotiations were fair and firm and no implied promises. Shop around and get out to other dealers.

I went shopping today too! My driving experience has been with a 5th wheel but still care is the same. Contact paper was covering the water stains...does a good job too. A one owner rig 70000 miles must have drug it through the woods.
He assured me he was cleaning it up,redecorating, putting up new wall paper, said it had not leaked since the roof coating... I casually mentioned I drove 5th wheels... and he shut up. I did not ask to start the engine. That coach would have needed to be stripped , walked out and did not look back.

Almost all dealers also sell used RVs. We bought our used Discovery from the same dealer we bought our new Excursion from. They also had several other nice higher end coaches on the lot.

I met a guy filling up a beautiful 12 year old Beaver he had bought from the local integra dealer. And of course there are private sales.

I can't imagine Camping world selling junk like that. It's an embarrassment

The dealership use to be Tom Raper RV

Purchased my now X wife and I purchased a Bounder 38P from them. The purchase went ok but the service work was beyond horrible. Spent approx 9 months at their dealership the first year we owned it, and they created more problems then they fixed. I didn't know at the time that Fleetwood RV's are made 2.5 hours from my home... So we took a trip up there and Fleetwood fixed everything.

I hoped CW changed how the old place did things but that didn't happen :(

Found a used Fleetwood Discovery today on the interwebzzzzzzz thats 10 miles from my house and a vintage I can afford. Hopefully look at it this weekend... Also hope that if I like it the owner will take a LOT off of his asking price.

Don't forget RV Trader online. They are all of USA and a lot of Canada, both private sales and dealers. There are a bunch of super nice used coaches on the site. You can fine tune your search to a specific make/model/year or do a blanket search.

Also check the classifieds here on iRV2.

Best of luck in your search, and finding what you want.

Regards,
W.D.
