What happened to gasoline prices?

Last Monday I filled up with Regular here in Northern Oklahoma and the price was $3.62. Today I filled up and it was $3.92, that's $.30 in 4 days. The news forecasters usually rave when the price jumps or drops 5-6 cents a gallon but I've heard nothing about this 30 cent jump. Must be the stations are getting ready for the holiday next week-end. Course there's a Conoco Phillips refinery right here in town so we're usually the highest in the state.

Guess it's just another of consumer gouging & price fixing that the large companies are able to get away with.

The truth is that fuel is a commodity and speculators "own" the supply so they set the prices as high as we can stand.

Funny thing is yesterday the price of gasoline was only 4 cents cheaper than diesel!

$4.20/gallon here in the Chicago burbs, been well over $4.00 for a month or more here.
Almost a dollar a gallon cheaper in the southern states. Something ain't right....

I think gas in Missouri was $1.87 in 2007, now it's $3.69, but I can't say anything politically. Eddie Elk.

USA today has an article which states that the rise in prices is due to refinery outages and maintenance in the midwest. The price rise is expected to expand nationwide. Now who in their right mind schedules maintenance during a period of peak demand. Oh yeah, the guy who wants to create a shortage which can drive prices up.

Somewhat, but taxes aren't the reason some areas are higher than others. Check out this chart from gasbuddy.com: Gasoline tax information - Illinois Gas Prices
Some states such as California have MUCH higher taxes on gas, yet right now the midwest is getting clobbered.
I noticed this trend where different regions around the country get hit for a while with outrageous increases and then it subsides, and then another region gets hit. Last fall it was California. Now Minnesota is paying upwards of $4.39/gall, according to gas buddy. And no one has a valid explanation why.
I do, I call it greed.

Memorial Day is only a week away. The price always runs up before a big travel holiday. It's a free market you know.
